I have just wiped and factory reset my Dad's 2013 MacBook Pro due to it slowing to a crawl for whatever reason, and I am now reinstalling his software.

In 2014 he bought and downloaded a copy of 'Office for Mac - Home and Student 2011' for £109.99, directly from Microsoft. I have logged into his Microsoft account and there it is under the Order History section.

I have tried to reinstall it on his freshly wiped Mac, and the Microsoft site advises me that it is discontinued, cannot be downloaded anymore, and you must now subscribe to Office 365 etc.

My Dad, being of the 'never throw anything away' generation, says he refuses to subscribe to any software as it's "just another way for them to get more money from you" and wants to continue using Office 2011 that he paid for and therefore has every right to use.

I called Microsoft support and they couldn't understand why anyone would insist on still being able to use something they bought and paid for... rofl and just kept saying that Office 2011 'doesn't exist anymore'. 'Please buy Office 365 instead'.

Any ideas?

I’ve used it before, and whist it is good, it unfortunately isn’t really suitable for my 70 year old parents who have always used Word/Excel.

Thank you, but I'm not looking to buy it again. It has been purchased once previously and I just need a link to download it, and will then presumably activate it from the product key from 2014 when it was originally purchased.

If that makes sense??

If you know anyone who has access to the MS Visual Studio Subscriptions portal, the ISO for Office 2011 Mac Home and Business Edition can be downloaded from there.

I've also sent you a PM.

All this effort to save my dad £50.

I think I may just buy it again myself, install it, and not tell him I had to pay for it...

What version of MacOS did you install?

IIRC - Being a 32bit app, Office Mac 2011 doesn't work on v10.15.

You're in luck. I still have the original Office for Mac 2011 installer disc. Should work fine so long as you have the original licence key for it (Home & Student Edition).

PM me and I'll create a download link for you.

I may be able to help...as I've got the installer backed up.

Of course there's no guarantee that it will install/work on the newer systems.

As above, Mac Office 2011 is 32bit, it won't run on the newer versions of MacOS, if you have updated then you will be wasting your time. I'm in the same situation, can't go newer than Mojave 10.4.6

MacOS comes with its own equivalent software, Pages, Numbers & Keynote, they work perfectly well so why hand over money to Microsoft?

My kids are now quite proficient with those tools for homework and even my wife has mastered Numbers (took some encouragement as she uses Excel most days when at work).

Because they're not 100% compatible...and requires the user to learn another suite of apps.

if you were a complete novice, then there's nothing wrong with the free alternatives, but if the user already owns, and is comfortable with MS Office 2011, then why not continue using it?
