Major 1st world problem here - I NEED to find a decent quality DAB/FM portable radio!

For those of us who go to Le Man each year you'll know how good (and maybe essential) it is to tune into RadioLM when we're at the track.

To date I've just used the crappy FM radio & earphones you can buy around the circuit for a few quid but want to upgrade to something much better. I'm happy to invest in something decent here as it'll get used properly.

For the record, I tried using my iPhone and the Radio LM app or various other data radio apps last year but they just didn't work, presumably as the cellular tower was over whelmed with so many phones in the area.

I've therefore got a (maybe impossible) list of essentials....my google search skills aren't working! In order of priority:

  • It needs to be wireless and not have a stupid antennae ie it doesn't need a earphone cable to get a reception
  • It needs to have bluetooth so that I can connect it to good quality wireless headphones
  • It ideally needs to have both FM & DAB functionality...just in case one fails
  • It needs to be small enough to fit into my pocket ie iPhone(ish) size
  • Not bothered about it being rechargeable or battery....there'll be periods when we're back at camp and can recharge things easily
I've only found the following unit but it's sold out and I've no idea where to turn to next so hoping the PH Hive can help!

Thanks all

I did look at that but I 'think' it needs the headphone cable in to get a reception.

Maybe some better quality Radio ear defenders?
3M peltor ones here for £83

No idea if they are any better than what you already have.

Actually, that's not a bad idea.

I use a mixture of Bose Quietcomfort noise cancellation and Apple AirPods Pro which both work very well at stopping unwanted sound getting in. Both are obviously bluetooth hence the need to be able to connect them wirelessly.

I'll give your suggested solution some more thought though as that may well be a better all round solution.

Thanks but these don't appear to have bluetooth and they also have a antenna so not very 'pocket' suited.

3M Peltors. I can sit and listen to the commentary, feel and still hear the engine noise but I don't have to listen to how Dave wiped his arse with a sock...

For me it's one of those: 'why I didn't do this sooner' purchases.

Right, that settles it. Time to get myself one of these.

You must go with the same Dave as me!

Another vote for the ear defenders with a radio built in. A very worthwhile purchase, and they have been used a huge amount, from Le Mans to Touring Car etc, and they are reasonably comfortable to wear for long periods (ie Le Mans).

Assuming you mean over-ear Bose QCs, you know you can use a cable with them as well, right? That would satisfy the antenna requirements as well

That's correct....I'm trying to get away from using a cable with the Bose headphones as the noice cancelling function doesn't work.

As above, I've pulled the trigger with the 3M Peltors so time will tell if it's been Monet well spent...
