I have a brand new unopened high end garmin (about 250£ in curry’s).
As I already had a satnav this stayed sealed it the box for about 2 yrs until today when I was planning to sell it today and it didn’t turn or do anything even after charging.I can’t see any reason it wouldn’t work .a few red lines on the screen is all that came up.I guess I’m just left with a duff electrical item now .its unlikely but I think the shop I was trying to sell it to could swapped it for a faulty one when I wasn’t looking .it said online they had 2 in stock at that shop but I couldn’t see any for sale .

Some mains chargers don't output what they're supposed to and some charging cables don't allow as much electricity to flow, depending on the gauge/quality/length of the wire used.

This happens with old phones and other old gadgets I dust off. Usually keeping it on charge for 15 to 30 mins gets the battery to a minimum state of charge for it to work properly.

After 2 years, without use, any li ion battery would be deeply discharged and won’t be able to put enough current into a device for it to work.

My work had approx 100 Toshiba netbooks stored in a warehouse. They'd been there for years before we decided to try one out. Broke the factory seal and the battery was dead. Can't get it to charge. Works fine off a charger but that kind of defeats the purpose of a "portable device".
They are well out of warranty, so no option but to scrap them. What a waste!

Surely a new battery is £20...
