I'm running an ex-service association website that seems to have come to the end of the line. Members are dying off and there is little money in the Association funds to continue hosting the site for very much longer.

Over the years I have been lucky enough to have been sent almost 3,000 photos of the ship, its crew and past reunions. It would be a shame to see these go away and be scattered, but I'm not naïve enough to think that very many people would want to see them.

Is there any way of downloading an entire gallery (php and MySql based with a Piwigo front end) and retain the structure but run it on a DVD or other media that can be sent to all the remaining members. Sadly, the youngest will be in their late seventies now so the easier to use the better. I think DVD may be a little optimistic - the pictures and video amount to almost 11Gb.

SD.

A couple of things that might work…

You could use an FTP program to download your entire website, then use your web host control panel to download the full sql database. From there you can run something like Local Web Browser software to run the site just on your PC. This will give you the time you need to get the pictures etc. I used this method for my own website when I closed it as I’d got a lot of written articles on there.

Another idea might be to try something like DownloadThemAll, which is a browser extension which will download all pictures from a webpage (including links from that page). I’ve not used it much but it does have quite a few options so it might be able to go recursively and get all your pictures (I don’t know, haven’t looked in detail).

As for making the dvds, you could lower the resolution of the images to get more on a disk, or maybe use a free web image host and dump them all there and send the link out to your remaining members. I use freeimage.host

Final idea once you have the pictures, could you select say 400 of the most relevant/best pictures and put them into a photo book (I use photobox, you just upload the pictures and get it to automatically organise and sort them, so very little work needed - unless you want to). Then offer that to the remaining members for the cost of creating the book. It wouldn’t be cheap with that many pictures but for the 5 minutes it would take to create, it might be a nice option and momento for them.

Hope that helps.

If you uploaded them to Google Photos you could share the link with members and let them navigate the photos online. It can be made public without any need for a Google account I believe.

Could use Google Docs to upload any writing too.

The Google photos suggestion is the best solution I think.

To display them from DVD will require some kind of interface, as simply dumping a load of images on a DVD for display - whilst possible - may not be displayed consistently across all DVD players without an interface of some kind.

Google images has a really good interface, and with some effort you could also organise the library into categories.
