Hi all. Has anyone heard of software that could monitor an application, in this instance quark and restart it if it crashes ?

Ideally it would be able to restart Quark and also select various functions from within Quark.

I did find an old windows 95 ( RTVRECO ) program that would restart a program if it crashed by monitoring dialogue boxes. This would work OK in a fashion. It managed to launch the program after a crash but you had to define coordinates to move the mouse pointer to perform functions in Quark and as it was a Win95 prog the defining coordinates bit was broken in XP.

None of this probably makes any sense now !! :hehe: sorry if it's all a bit confusing.

Look for srvinstw.exe. Once you have it running as a service, you can configure all sorts of logging and recovery actions.

Indeed.

If the app supports command-line parameters then it would a piece of the proverbial to write.

I could knock a beta up in an evening, I reckon. I'd be happy to do that so long as I retained the rights to distribute it as freeware.

However, if someone could research whether such a program currently exists or not first then that would be great.

Thanks guys

this is the link to the program I've been trying to use :

www.rtvsoft.com/RtvReco.htm

It would work if I could get the coordinate function to work. I could use trial and error to get the mouse pointer in the correct position but it would be a real pain in the ar$e.

I was thinking of something far more basic.

I was thinking of a service with a thread waiting on a process ("quark.exe" or whatever) to finish. When the process does finish (ie. through crashing) then it re-launches it using command-line parameters eg. "quark.exe /x /y /z /o:blah" or whatever.

No fancy mouse movements or gizmos or stuff.

yeah that sounds good Jon. One little problem though is that when Quark re-starts their is another application ( a Quark extension ) that Quark launches. It runs from within Quark by selecting a menu and a key combo.

We use a program at work that monitors if a program has died or been closed and relaunches it after a certain amount of time. Can't remember it's name of hand but I'll have a look tomorrow.

Something like Guard or Guardian......

Use the 'start' command in a batch file - I beleive 'start /w <command>' waits for the process to exit before continuing. Put that in a batch file thus:

:top
start /w quark.exe
goto :top

On second thoughts, maybe /w makes it *not* wait to exit - try it both ways or /? if it doesnt work.

Don't know Quark internals though - has it got startup macros or something?

And why does Quark keep crashing? Sounds like a load of crap to me
