iPhone screen time
Discussion
I know it’s been discussed here before but I’ve just gotta repeat what a complete pile of s
t this feature is.
I mean what’s the point of allowing ‘one more minute’ on every app the kid has! I block it at 9pm and with 60 apps he’s easily still on it at 10pm!
Apple really do need to sort it out. There’s more than 10 ways the kids can get round screen time according to this site (including simply changing the time on their device!). https://protectyoungeyes.com/12-ingenious-screen-t...
Come on Apple. Up the game. We just need a big red button to disable the device when we need it. Not some fancy over engineered feature with easy ‘get arounds’. The kids know more than us half the time. BIG RED BUTTON!!

“Parents, listen – your kid is always going to be one step ahead of you. Quit trying to win this game. You will never solve this situation with a technical solution. It can only be solved relationally. TALK to your kid. Congratulate them on being smarter than you and a company with over a trillion dollars of market value. Then laugh about it, and talk to them about what happens next.”

The advice in your link seems spot on.
One thing which works is to use the content restriction feature and disallow access to all apps if they keep attempting to get round whatever rules you give them.
This only takes a second to enable or disable, but has the drawback for the child that all the apps will be moved around on their home screen so it's a pain for them to get it back to how they want it. They only have do that once or twice before the threat of it happening again is a good motivator!

The basic functionality on the phone goes so far, but not really far enough. I hope I'm not about to break PH rules here, but there's a system called Qustodio that will enable you to apply far greater levels of control if you want to. The kids won't be able to get around the controls that this enforces, and it will also notify you if they try to access content that you don't want them accessing.
I should add that Qustodio is something that I use, not something that I own or have any links with!

Thanks, I feel that all these options are just over engineered, when all a parent wants to do is be able to remotely block a device for a period of time when needed, then just unblock it as easily. All this restrict this, restrict that between certain times blah blah is great, but it just lacks that big red button lol.
Apple don't seem particularly motivated to improve upon what they launched, to be honest.
The "Allow 15 minutes", "Allow 1 hour" and "Allow all day" (until midnight, which I'm pretty sure no parent would want) are nowhere near granular enough, and as remarked you need a big red button to withdraw access if/when something bad happens. Some built in apps (e.g. Find My - which can be used to obnoxiously ping (locate) parent's phones until they respond to Screen Time requests) can't be blocked, only reduced to 1 minute max.
In the absence of that - as suggested above - you can go into Content Restrictions and change the age range for allowed apps to "Don't Allow Apps". This will immediately disable everything, leaving only iMessage and presumably phone calls. You'll soon find out that it's worked.

Can’t you just have a box they put the device in at bed time?
And you could join them in putting yours in there too?
If you really want to go down the policing route rather than relationship/behaviour route, can’t you just block the internet to their devices after 9pm?
That pretty much limits the usefulness… unless they then play plinky plonk games?
