My OH's hairdresser has asked me to carry out some updates to his website. He's given me access to the hosting service and I've had a good nosy around the files. It appears that it's been created in Wordpress, but using a third party template. I have no idea what template was used and I can't find out as the site's original creator is, sadly, no longer of this world. If I log into Wordpress is there something I can do to connect Wordpress to the files on his hosting service so that I can load the site in Wordpress, amend it, and then save the amended site back to the hosting service?

As you can probably tell, I really have no idea what I'm doing here. I've previously made a site fully within Wordpress and also made a couple of simple sites from scratch in HTML & CSS which I've uploaded to a hosting service, but this is a new level of confusion for me. I'm not a professional web designer, just someone who helps out a bit with easy stuff.

You don't want hosting access to edit the site, that's too deep. You want the admin access to wordpress.

I.e. www.whatever.com/wpadmin

Or similar. Then, once in, you'll be able to edit each page and find out what temp!are has been used.

I'm not a huge fan. One of my busines sites was made for me with WP and custom templates and editing it
dependent on a lot of plugins still working and it's so confusing I have to retrain myself each time I want to add a photo etc.

Just checked mine.

www.whatever.com/wp-admin

Left menu:" Appearance" - and then the installed and active templates are listed under the Themes sub menu

It depends what kind of updates the OP needs to perform.

Is it just content updates? In which case use the wpadmin link as per above.

If it's visual (template) changes required then the best action is to find another template, preferable one that's easily modified.

The creation of a Wordpress template is non trivial - some templates allow for CSS edits to change certain objects.

Don't touch the files.
WordPress is a platform for dynamic content.
All the content and most of the settings and customisation exist in the database not the files. Doing anything with the files if you don't know WordPress will lead to problems.

Word press isn't like a desktop application, you can not open a copy of a site and edit it offline. It is a self hosting application so you login to your WordPress site and edit content, manage themes and do admin settings with the built in user interface.

If you can get the WordPress login details rather than the hosting providers then you should find it fairly easy to make some changes.
If you can't there are various ways you can get back in but that will depend what sort of access you get from the hosting provider.

I would suggest you get yourself your own wordpress site to experiment with before making changes on someone else's.

The plot thickens!

I've had another dig in the files. The site features a Wordpress blog, however, the rest of the site might not have been done in Wordpress. The rest of the site is actually a bit odd because the text that appears on the site is stored in a folder called "snips" on the hosting site. The text for each section is in a txt file inside the snips folder. When I hover over the relevant link on the website it links to a php file, but there are no php files that I can find on the hosting site other than the ones for the Wordpress blog. What this basically means is that the previous developer built the site in a way which is way beyond my ability in terms of knowing how to get into it and modify it!

Who hosts the website?

Do you have access to the web server (apache, nginx, IIS etc) config?

Would you understand it?

The snips folder maybe a Wordpress plugin that was used for SEO:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/snip-structured-data...

I’ve done a site or two in wp and never found it easy to figure out.

Every wordpress site is effectively a blog, it started as a blogging platform but it had the ability to make pages as well as post, it was so easy to build pages it became the defacto web hosting platform that overshadowed it's blog features.
