Anyone a wizard with HP MFP configurations?
Discussion
I have a 'new to me' MFP M475dw (Laserjet 400 series) that I'm trying to get set up but it's playing 'silly buggers' with me.
https://support.hp.com/gb-en/product/hp-laserjet-p...
Connected via ethernet to my home network, I can print to it and 'scan to email' from it, but I can't get it to see my network folders for the 'scan to folder' option. I know my 'credentials' are correct as I've used them on an old laptop to test connectivity. I know my folder path is correct as when it it copy/pasted into Chrome, it browses to the folder I want.
There seems to be a few issues I'm having and they are possibly all linked - but I don't know what else to try in order to solve them.
Issues:
Can't set up scan to folder
Can't access the Apps menu on the touch screen
Cant set up HP E print via the EWS (say's it can't connect to the internet which i know is a lie as it can send an email ok)
Can't register the printer on my HP account (no code displayed that I need to type in to 'link' it to my account).
When installing the printer driver software using the HP official download, it gets as far as the bit where it want to connect to the internet, then I get stuck as it can't 'see' the internet. I don't use a proxy, so am simply connected via my network switch, to my router and out to the big wide world. No other device I own has issues connecting to the internet and I can freely send data (pages to be printed, accessing the EWS etc) to the printer via my network.
Might some / all of these be caused by the fact that the last owner still has it registered on their HP account?
I've re-installed the latest firmware, have reset nvram, have reset to factory defaults and have now run out of things to try. I've posted on the HP forum but I don't expect HP to reply anytime soon as it's a relatively old printer.
Any other ideas as to what to try?

Try connecting to an IP address, not a hostname - eg \\192.168.1.2\myshare
When you put the username in try putting pcname\username and not just the username
Having dealt with a fair few of this type of unit over the last god knows how long these 2 suggestions would be the first places I would look if I was on-siteWhen you put the username in try putting pcname\username and not just the username

So, have now tried \\192.168.0.149\myshare and also \\mylaptopdomainname\myshare - no joy. (PS a brand new shared folder set up purely to try this out)
have also tried this using my NAS shared folders - both ways (IP and name)
Have tried IP\login name and machine_name\login name, no joy either way.
I 'know' I'm using the correct credentials as I have them saved in a password manager and have also used them on other machines / web interfaces to check I DO have the right credentials etc.

If I had a secondhand printer and could print to it and scan from it, I'd consider that #winningatlife
Yes, this is the icing on the cake - I can 'scan to email' (or USB drive), so don't need the functionality but WANT (goddamit!!) to use the folder option as well.buggalugs said:
with MFP's if smb doesn't work straight away I usually bang a little filezilla ftp server where it needs to go and scan via ftp, you're done in 5 mins that way.
Whoa, slow down there Tonto - I'm happy with using Filezilla, but how do I do the rest of that?buggalugs said:
As that's an older unit make sure it has the latest firmware updates
Yup, latest firmware downloaded from HP (a few times now) and installed (via Win 10 and Win 7 machines) - already had the latest firmware when I picked up the machine.A few other ideas...
Disable Windows firewall?
Does the user you're connecting as definitely have permission on the share you're trying?
Anti-Virus stopping anything?
Can you confirm the printers IP address and gateway from the printer itself? Sometimes a diagnostics printout can help, just in case it's still got some network settings left over from the previous owner.
Having a dig around, it seems like this has fixed it for other people:
Please try the following steps and check for any difference:
-On your PC open the Control Panel and select Uninstall a Program.
-Click on Turn Windows features on or off.
-Scroll down and locate SMB1.0/SIFS File Sharing Support.
-Ensure it is marked with a V mark, else expend it and select all the 3 options below.
-Press OK and restart your PC as prompt, then try scanning to that PC.

Only the standard Win 10 firewall running - I've tried to set up the scan to folder up on 2 different win 10 machines and 1 Win 7 machine, both by the Scan to Folder Wizard and via the EWS, both to my NAS (Synology DS418J with 'standard' (does it have one?) firewall) and my local machines shared folder (with permissions to allow me to read/write etc). On the 'Scan to Folder' wizard, I can even browse to the folder, so don't have to type it out, but on the EWS, you have to type in the details etc.Disable Windows firewall?

It's my home machines, my home NAS, my home network - all set up by me and all working flawlessly for every other device.
Only the inbuilt antivirus running, no aftermarket stuff, and yes, all as default and installed by Windows (all up to date and my machines date/time is accurate and set by Internet timing etc).
If it's quite an old printer, it probably doesn't support SMB V3/3.1 which is the default for Windows now.
SMB is the Windows file sharing protocol. The later versions are far more secure, and the printer almost certainly doesn't support anything later than SMB V1 (Windows XP) , SMB V2 (Windows Vista) or SMB V2.1 (Windows 7).

Another really good suggestion, I've had this before as wellSMB is the Windows file sharing protocol. The later versions are far more secure, and the printer almost certainly doesn't support anything later than SMB V1 (Windows XP) , SMB V2 (Windows Vista) or SMB V2.1 (Windows 7).
OP, google search "windows 10 Enable SMB V1" and follow the instructions that you find (if you're OK with filezilla then enabling a windows feature should be childsplay for you)
If you get stuck I'm sure one of us can do a step-by-step

From HP: Your printer supports SMB1.0 only, you must enable SMB 1.0 to successfully connect to a shared folder on your server.SMB is the Windows file sharing protocol. According to Amazon's historical price data, it went on sale March 2012 and stopped selling around early 2015.
How would I go about 'installing' SMB1.0 if that's such a thing? Is SMB 3 not backwards compatible?

IP Confirmed as the same on the printer, gateway same as my router IP address (192.168.0.1), DNS set to router IP and second DNS set to 8.8.4.4 (have also tried it with just the one router DNS in there).
Found the SMB 3 options, just installing / switching on and about to reboot.
Ok, so buggalugs gets the first credit for mentioning SMB, but full credit goes to nickd01 for more info on how to check / do this!
I can now add my laptop shared folder as a destination - it passed the HP test successfully!! Yippee
Now I just need to see how to enable SMB on my NAS (if I can....)
Edited to add:
OK, SMB 1 enabled on my NAS and successfully tested - all good - but Synology don't recommend enabling SMB 1.0 due to security vulnerabilities and ransomware etc. Decisions decisions.....
Many thanks to the wise members of PH!! Always up for a challenge
