Hi guys,

I have an iPhone 8 Plus which I’ve had for 4 years. It’s still going strong, though the battery is down to 83% now (which I think is pretty good).

Anyway, I’d just like a newer, faster iPhone. My mrs and the stepkids all tell me that “everyone” (without quantifying who or what “everyone” actually is) says that the 13 is crap and that the 12 is the better model.

Is there any truth to this? Would I notice a significant jump between my 8 and a 13PM?

Cheers.

Went from an X to a 12 Pro Max last year and also have a 7 Plus and 12 for work.

In general use (to me) the 7 Plus is just as fast, screen just as clear etc etc as the 12 Pro Max.

Big difference is battery life and camera which are both much better with the pay off that the Pro Max feels heavy in the hand especially compared to the non Pro 12 with its aluminium chassis.

The 13 is supposed to have a better screen and camera / video than the 12.

I usually upgrade my persona iPhone every 4 years or so, my work phone is only upgraded when it dies or stops receiving updates.

Wouldn’t say the 13pm is crap and 12 was better in fact I’d say there’s not much difference in the real world. I always said the 8+ was peak iPhone and after that they just added features for features sake. The qi charging is probably the only “leap” that they’ve done in years, all the other upgrades I don’t even notice

In summary, the iPhone 13 is technically a better phone. Just read the specs.

In reality, I have the iPhone 13 pro, my daughter has the 12 Pro. We don’t see any real difference in day to day use.

Money no object, get the 13. If you want to save a few quid get the 12, they’re both good phones.

There isn’t really anything which makes the 12 better than the 13. But for a lot of people the 13 wasn’t a massive jump. However, the 13 will give you a better processor, cameras, battery and pro motion screen over your current phone. The latter is in itself a good reason to upgrade. And the battery life is just crazy.

Having used the Pro Max and the Pro I actually ended up sticking with the Pro. The max is a BIG phone and while I’ve always liked a big screen, it looked utterly ridiculous in my jeans pocket.

I also found the Pro felt even smoother when scrolling through certain apps, probably as there was less screen to update.

I upgraded from a 12 Pro Max to a 13 Pro Max.

My experience:

- Better battery life and battery health on 13 Pro Max (this time last year, battery health started nose diving and settled at 91% around June 21)
- Ultra wide angle camera is much better on 13 Pro Max (now has auto focus)
- Cellular connectivity is better (across 3G, 4G and 5G)
- 120hz refresh rate on the display is nice, but not hugely noticeable unless you go looking for it
- Cinematic video mode is a rubbish gimmick

Everything else is almost identical. Unless you're getting a decent discount on the 12 Pro Max, you may as well just go for the 13 Pro Max. Or just hang on for another 5 months or so when the inevitable iPhone 14 comes out - you'll start seeing the 13 Pro Max receive discounts.

I’ve got a 13PM and came to it from a 12mini which was awful.

The 13PM is excellent IMO. Camera is leagues ahead of the works 2020 SE or the 12/12mini.

Some good deals on them too - I used mobilephonesdirect and got it on a 24mth deal, £49 down and £47/mth on O2 with 350gb of data. So £1177 over the term … of which the phone alone is £1049 so the sim is all of £128 (or £5.33/mth)

The 13PM will be miles better in every way than an 8, although they'll feel similar in use.

I went from a an XR to a 13PM and it's a massive improvement. Faster, better camera, bigger screen, better connectivity performance etc.

It still looks and works the same way so it's not an exciting leap forward.

I have a 13 Pro Max, it's the best phone I have ever owned. Had loads of iPhones and Android phones in the past.
Battery life is just insane, lovely screen, really good camera system, good speakers. I don't use a case and it still looks utterly brand new - no scratches at all. Combined with my AirPods Pros I absolutely love it. Only cons I can think of are size and weight, but personally it's absolutely fine for me.

13 Pro Max superb device. Just had a week away and used it for photo's and video where normally I would have taken a Sony RX100. I've not missed the Sony.

It is big in your hand. Hard to use 1 handed
It barely fits the car charging mat.
It is fast.
Screen is excellent
It works exactly like my old 6S and X - just faster.
Camera is way way better - but I only take occasional pics
Battery is brilliant.

If you can live with tthe size of it - Its a great phone,

About a month ago I Went from 11 pro max to 13 pro max, I preferred my 11 pro max thinner/curved designs rather than the square design, It was the same when I went from 3gs to the 4, even though the 11 PM and 13 PM are big phones the 11 also fit in my jean pockets better.

Can’t really tell much difference spec wise in the real world, I have 5g disabled on mine so can’t comment on that particular benefit

My motive for changing was the storage, the 64gb on my 11 was constantly full, so I upgraded to a 250gb

I would suggest buying a refurbished 11 Pro Max from Apple, they have a new battery and new case and are pretty much a new phone, unless you specifically want something only the 13 offers.

https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/refurbished/iphone

11 Pro Max 256GB is £779 saving almost £400 over when it was new.

13 Pro Max user here.

As others have said it’s excellent in terms of power, screen, cameras, battery life etc.

Just be aware because it’s the newer flat sided design, it feels quite chunky, and it’s certainly got some heft to it. Personally I like that, it feels solid, well built and quite easy to grip, but if you’re used to the curved edges of the 8, it’ll definitely feel chunkier at least initially.

Thank you everyone for your responses, they’re all very much appreciated. I think I’ll just go straight for the 13PM. It’s size and the much better cameras are what draws me to it. I have bin lids for hands so the bigger the phone the better for me.
