Does anyone have a decent quality photo printer that also has a scanner and automatic document feeder?

My trusty 12yr old Epson PX720WD is giving up the ghost (not picking up paper...have had a go at disassembling and cleaning up the rollers to no avail), so am looking for a replacement.

The Epson has a scanner, which is quite handy. It'd be even handier if it had an ADF as quite frequently I have piles of papers to scan. So was wondering if anyone has such a device. (I appreciate that the two functions don't necessarily sit well together).

Will be scouring Google, but thought I'd ask here.

What sort of budget are you looking at? What usage?

If you don't need photo-quality printing, and you definitely want an inkjet, then I'd recommend one of the EcoTank range ( e.g. the ET-4800 @ £250 may fit your needs).

If you don't fancy paying that much up-front then there's the Workforce Pro range which uses the normal ink system and start about £100 ( e.g. WF-2880DWF). If you need higher capacity ADF and faster print speeds, then the slightly more expensive WF-3820DWF @ £120 and WF-4820DWF @ £150 might fit the bill.

We bought a ET-2756 (didn't need the an ADF) as our 'house' printer last June and we've still only used about 1/4 of the ink that came with it, and I have my trusty Expression XP-960 for photos/scanning.

Budget not a massive problem. Happy to pay more upfront for a better printer (the Epson that's dying being a case in point).

It's very low volume use really. Being sensible I'd just buy two devices (scanner and printer) but I don't really want the space used up.

When I do need to print photos, I want them to be decent quality. (On that I should probably go to a print shop... But that's not convenient smile

Will check out the ecotank ones. Have also seen Canon's megatank range.

If it's low volume and photo quality is more important than speed, then I'd normally recommend the newer version of what I've currently got...but the newer versions either don't have the 6 ClariaHD inks (extras are light cyan and light magenta), or the ones that do use those inks don't have the ADF.
  • The Expression Premium XP-7100 is similar to mine, but without the ClariaHD inks (so you might as well go for an Ecotank version).
  • The Expression Photo XP970 is similar to mine, but without the ADF.
The longevity is why I've always stayed away from the bottom end of the range, as they tend to use the thinnest plastic and reduced-capacity inks to keep the price down...and they you end up dumping them rather than buying genuine ink (yes, I'm one of those who only ever buys genuine inks).

I tend to buy something in the £250-£500 range - depending on what my jobs required at the time - and I'm glad I don't need my A2 printer anymore as it took up too much space, and used inks that became hard to find after about 5 years. A4 is good enough for me now.

The Workforce Pro range are built a little sturdier due to their intended use in a small/medium office environment...but then tend not to focus on the 'photo' quality as it's business prints rather than stuff you want to frame...so only have CMYK.

Thanks for that. Has saved me some time.

The 720 has 6 inks. Cartridges, so not cheap. But I long ago only used genuine inks and papers as it was the only way to get consistent prints.

It's feckin annoying that it will no longer pick up paper from the main tray. It picks up from the photo tray OK, but I often need A4 output. Also doesn't have an ADF.

I might drop the ADF requirement. I do have a colour laser with one... It's just not conveniently located (first world problems!).
