I have a 2019 13" MacBook Pro - bought in late 2019. The screen has developed a fault - flickering, odd tones to the colours etc. These faults are not present on an external monitor.

My Apple stuff normally lasts for years - I have a 2013 MacBook Air that my son now uses. Still runs like new. So it's annoying that this relatively new MacBook is faulty - and out of warranty.

That aside - is there a reasonable alternative to a £600 Apple repair? I've done a bit of Googling and it doesn't look like it.

Because I use my MacBook a lot (office and home), I've replaced it with the new 14" M1 MacBook Pro - which is very lovely. Perhaps I should take out the Apple care package?!

Sounds like they have to replace the entire display assembly.

Reset it and put it up for sale on ebay for spares or repairs?
I wouldn’t bother fixing it. Apple made a ton of compromises to get that slim form factor. For instance, I’m having keyboard issues on a 2018 Macbook Pro. To replace it, Apple will basically change the top case and logic board because its all built together. Even though the repair is free, its going to come with another flawed butterfly keyboard, so I think the best option is to ditch it and move on.

For the new 14 and 16 inch models, I think they made them less integrated and a lot more repairable, much like the pre all USB C Macbook Pro models.

Have a play with a current gen MacBook Air.

It trounces my circa £4000 9(iirc) 2017 MacBook Pro.

I was quoted circa £1600 for a repair..(by two reputable Indies)
New air with AppleCare way less than that.

It has reached a point when I used to need the top specs Apple laptop.
Now - the lowest tier with enough storage is all I need. (16 gb memory to run Parallels + 1tb drive)

They did indeed! I've been reading about a variety of issues with them. It seems to be pot luck which ones you get.

I have a late 2017 15" MacBook Pro...
  • The black area above the screen has light patches in it like it's de-laminating.
  • Every now and then there's a "crack" from the casing like you get when something is expanding or contracting with temperature change.
  • If I play sound through the speakers with more than about three blobs of volume there's a loud "pop" and all the bass drops out.
It's actually a lovely piece of kit and I really like the touch bar, but it is indeed compromised.
