My PS4 has died, it did an update on Thursday night when i turned it off and and it now wont turn back on again, first time since thursday iv'e tried it.

It says "checking internal drive" then gets to 24% hangs up and then announces it cannot start PS4.

Then it wants me to plug in the usb lead and press the PS button, then it asks for a USB with a PS operating system file on it in a certain format.

I've done all this but its not happy and says that it cannot detect the USB drive.

If i try to start it in safe mode it only gives me the option to start from scratch and format the drive, I don't want to do this.

I suspect the update has broken something or pushed the hdd over the edge.

Like an idiot I assumed the save data was in the PS network and not on my PS4, it turns out all my save data is on the dead ps4 and the 300+ hours i have in A/c Odyssey are stuck on a broken drive.

I'm keen to try an get the save data off the ps4 and onto a usb stick and I will simply buy a PS5, its been on the cards for a while but now it seems a bit necessary.

Anyone know any companies that can take the whole console and get the save data off it ? I am 2/3 through odyssey and all the DLC and really don't want to start it again. All the other games i had on it I'm not bothered about, just this one. I got right into it and the character build is just how I want it.

Is it possible to pull the drive and wire it to a Linux machine?

Possibly, I've tried a basic copy/ clone but it doesn't like it. Gets stuck half way.

At this point I'm wanting to give the problem to a pro, I'm now outside my zone with it.

I think any data is encrypted to the individual ps4, just to complicate it.

The problem is that the hard drive is encrypted and can only be read by the machine that it was in. If you transplant it to anything else, the data won’t be in a readable format.

I found this out the hard way.

Are you a PS+ subscriber? If so then you will have the auto cloud backups and can recover the save data that way.

I have go the actual ps4 working by putting another drive in it, so its not died, just the hdd.

I am quite up for sending the whole thing off to have the data rescued but I have no idea if anywhere offers this as a service.

I have something called Spinrite, it will get a disk working if it can. Yes, it costs but it usually works and I usually scan my drives regularly.

$90.

No links because I am not affiliated but I own this since goodness knows when and I think it will at least get your drive readable again so that you might migrate off it.
