I dropped my Huawei P20 pro this morning and the screen is intact but black. The phone itself appears to be working, it buzzes when i touch the fingerprint sensor etc, but if i connect it to my laptop to access all my stuff i need to do something on the phone screen which of course doesnt work!
I could take it to one of those dodgy looking phone shops but im not so keen on that, i looked at replacing the screen which i might be able to do but would more than likely balls it up, or there seem to be some programs i could download to recover the data. That seems like a good route, but it does make me a bit nervous in case i download some bug to my laptop so does anyone know of one which is any good? Ta

On most of the Android phones I've encountered, P20 Pro included as my wife had one, you need to select a USB preference for file transfer/photo transfer/tethering else it'll just charge (makes sense lest someone just plugs your unattended device into a laptop and swipe your stuff, which then makes it very difficult to achieve in scenarios like yours with a broken screen...)

Edit - I'm predicting this on the screen being unviewable but touch input is still functional - if it's the latter also I think you're screwed?

Maybe see if there's any videos on YouTube os someone accessing file transfer mode and try to replicate blind on your screen - keep it plugged into your laptop and it should show up if you achieve accessing transfer mode?

It could probably be done via ADB (Android Debug Bridge) but you'd have had to/be able to turn on USB debugging in developer settings and then still need to set USB preferences to file transfer to enable.

I've just remembered that Huawei have their own PC/Mac application for this, but again you'll need to be able to activate what they call HDB in the settings to allow it access to the device -

Good luck.

Plug a USB hub into it, then plug a USB to HDMI cable into that with a keyboard and a mouse.

A USBC to HDMI lead will allow you to see the screen.

If the touch layer is also broken a USB mouse will also work but you'd need some sort of hub to plug both In.

I've used a hub very similar to this with my Mate 20 Pro to use a TV and mouse.

Wouldn’t it be easier to restore from your last backup?

I'd be tempted give it a try anyway, given it's free. You might be able to hit the correct bit of the screen.
