I was wondering if there is any way to permanently enable low power mode on an iPhone 6.

I understand from a bit of googling that it's possible using IOS 13, but the iPhone 6 will only go to IOS12 (currently running 12.5.5).

Yes I realise the phone is now 7.5 years old, but it still does what I need, it's just the battery is getting tired (battery health 74%), so I put it in low power mode to make it last longer. Trouble is that as soon as it gets to 80% charged, it auto shuts off low power mode, so I have to manually switch it back on every day.

I suspect the answer is to carry on doing this manually, and most would suggest just getting a new phone, but wondered if anyone knew of any way to automate it?

For £49 Apple will stick a new battery in it for you. If you’re lucky, they’ll not bother to replace the battery and just get a reconditioned phone.

Not bothered about a recon phone, as mine's in pretty much perfect condition - it's been in a good waterproof case since the day I bought it. The only time it came out of the case, was to put it in a new case as the old one was getting battered. At the time (a couple of years ago), it still looked brand new.

Fair point on the new battery, although it'd be typical if as soon as I get this done, my online banking app, or another critical app I use will get updated and no longer be supported on IOS 12!

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion - so looks like I have a choice of a new battery or daily put it in low power mode..... or a new phone.

Dave.

You could use Shortcuts to create a script to turn on low power mode when battery level reaches a set point. (Or any other trigger you can think of.)

Thanks but that was the only solution that I'd managed to find. Unfortunately the iPhone 6 only supports up to IOS 12 and Shortcuts requires IOS 13 or later.

Battery in an iphone6 pretty easy to replace at home if you’re happy with some little screwdrivers.

That's something I'd not considered.

I've replace quite a few watch batteries, a couple on reasonably expensive watches (>£1k), which has required very small screwdrivers, magnifier etc.. so something I'm happy using.

Do you have any links for recommended battery suppliers?
.... goes off to google relevant replacement vids on YouTube.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I bought a kit from Amazon (other online tat retailers are available). Came with the battery and all the tools, and was sub £20.

I used ifixit as a guide

They’ll sell you a complete kit as well I suspect.

Fiddly, but very doable. And quite satisfying

Brilliant - kit ordered from Amazon for £14 with great reviews, and larger than original battery capacity.

Looking forward to having a go at this following the iFixit guide you linked to. Thanks.

Good luck. Take your time - especially removing the screen.
I’d make sure the battery is as discharged as possible
