Discussion
I have an iPhone 11 currently with Sky mobile, this is my main work phone and I have had the same number for about 5 years so I would like to keep that.
My issue is that I live in Spain and for the last year I have been able to use my data/calls like normal..until the other day when I got a text saying that it will now be £2 per day, I have turned the data roaming off now but it means when I leave the house the phone is unusable, annoying!
With the iPhone being dual sim I am thinking of getting a local sim card to use for data when out of the house but then a basic e-sim which will work in Europe, I wont need the data but I need it to work if people have to call me.
Hopefully this makes sense, its all new to me, I have no idea how an eSim even works or how to set it up.
Any tips/recommendations?

With an eSIM you can have as many data profiles as you like.... do Sky Mobile issue eSIMs? If not, use the Spanish provider at the eSIM and Sky as your physical SIM.
Settings/Mobile Data/Add Data Plan. In the UK, with EE, for example, they will text you the data plan - very easy. Or they can send a QR code to you... You can then call the additional line anything you like and can have both lines on all the time, you can have one just for data, the other not etc etc. You can slice and dice in a few ways on the iPhone.
Thanks for the info.
I dont think Sky offer them and not many companies in Spain either so I think my best option maybe to use a Spanish physical sim and then a UK eSim such as this: https://xpatfone.com/pricing-1
£9 pm plan would be enough, as mentioned its really just to receive and make calls, the spanish sim would be used for the data.
Do you need to 'switch' between the two sims for them to work or do they work along side each other, so if they are both active will it automatically connect using the Spanish sim for data?

Do you have to stay with Sky?
many other networks are still offering free EU roaming
I am tied with them until September but I am just going to move anyway, my monthly plan isn't much and I need a new provider ASAP so I will see that contract through but move now.many other networks are still offering free EU roaming
I was considering moving to another UK provider but my worry is they do the same in the future, I asked Sky when taking out the phone and they said to me its unlikely to happen, then I get. text out the blue the other day informing me of the fees.

Only used one recently on holiday but they are quite clever and you can chose which sim to use for data and calls. You actually end up with two signal strength bars on the iphone JCKST1 said:

You can set up so that each SIM (physical or eSIM) can be the primary SIM for calls and/or data. Captain_Morgan said:
Can’t help with the esim but as the introduction of roaming charges part way through your contact is a material change you should have the option of leaving foc
I might give them a call later on and push a bit more, the person I talked to said I can wait until September and leave or they can put me on a lower plan now but then it would be for 12 months (no logic when I was asking to leave!).I managed to find the contract on an old email, hopefully this is enough to end the contract?
Prices may increase and services may vary, including during your minimum term. If we increase your monthly subscription price you may cancel your subscription without early termination charge. Other prices and services may also vary. We will let you know about any material changes before we make them.
They haven't technically increased my monthly price but put me in a position where I need to spend £60 per month to use my phone, even though at the time the main/only requirement for me was that EU roaming was covered long term.
Lets see how they handle it.
