Getting rid of the installed Macafee from the missus' laptop as its a 600Mhz jobby & running like a slug in treacle.

Will install AVG free edition but what's a decent freeware firewall? (She doesnt browse for torrents or anything that dodgy)

thanks
Ed

Try www.zonelabs.com for ZoneAlarm which is a very user friendly firewall that does most things for itself.

I use ZoneAlarm, no problems with it so far. My broadband connection also has a hardware firewall at this end and a software firewall at the ISP end, but I keep ZA for those odd occasions when I need to use dialup.

I'm on ZA v6. No problems so far. I run some other stuff aswell to keep track of the ads and spyware. Very intuitive front end, I'm quite impressed.

I have used the following apps for a while now - they work together well to provide comprehensive protection and don't interfere with each other. However, I also have an ADSL router with NAT to hide behind, so YMMV.

Firewall = Kerio Personal Firewall (www.kerio.com)
Anti-virus = AntiVIR (www.free-av.com)

Both are free for non-commercial use.

Hope this helps

edited to add - for spyware, I use Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and HijackThis. All free and very handy for blasting malware annoyances. [k]

I recommend Spyware Blaster and CCleaner too. None of these tools offer perfect protection but if you keep them up to date then between them I think you're reasonably safe.

I run no firewall, AV or spyware software on the Windows XP box at all. Never have. Likely never will - it's never caught anything "nasty". Of course, it sits behind a proper dedicated firewall and isn't allowed to talk directly to the Internet (it uses a Squid proxy). That and running Firefox sorts out everything.
