I've just reinstalled XP onto my machine and I have a number of issues that need resolving (I'm sure that they're simple but I'm cr*p with pc's!!)

1. when i try to play a dvd i get the following message in win media player "W m P cannot play this DVD because a compatible dvd decoder is not installed on this computer" - the drive knows what the dvd is 'cos i can look at the files - so is it a driver for the drive i need or something else??? -
or are there any other downloadable dvd players out there???

2. how do i get the sound to work again!!!! (don't say turn up the volume!!!)

many thanks in advance

mr fryske!

It's not a driver it is a decoder. Takes the compressed data and turns it into tunes etc.

If you look at the player tab in the options make sure download codecs is checked. might be worth running an update.

I know it sounds daft, but try changing the volume in media player.

1. XP WMP doesnt have a DVD player out of the box. It may come with SP2, cant remember. You can download one off the web, buy one in PC world etc. If your machine came with one, reload it, this will sort the issue. I use WinDVD Pro, others like PowerDVD. There are loads out there.

2. If you right click My Computer (on the desktop or on the start menu) and select Manage, then in the tree on the left select Device Manager do you see any devices with small yellow exclamation marks on them?

Its probably device driver related...

Try downloading an mpeg2 decoder for the video problems.
