Hi-speed USB if possible
Discussion
I have just bought a external DVD re-writer for my 3 years old laptop but when I plug it in the USB slot it says I have pluged a hi-speed device into a low speed USB hub and it will run slower, what I want to know is if there is a way to upgrade to a hi-speed USB or do I have to stick with what I have got. I can only transfer/write at 4 x speed but the writer can write at upto 16 x speed on DVDs.
I don't know if you can get a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card, but it might be worth a google around to see if such a thing exists..
I'm not sure if the bus speeds on a PCMCIA interface will be capable of the increased speeds offered by USB2, but it's worth investigating.. especially if it saves buying a new laptop!

Unfortunatly it's not quite so clear cut as that (going way O/T) a lot of older USB 2.0 devices were just rebadge 1.1 and operated at 1.1 speeds. these were usually labeled as just 'USB 2.0', full 2.0 devices were '2.0 hi-speed' or similar. it was done in an effort to introduce 2.0 quicker as none of the manufactures wanted to be the first to invest.
