My Dad's IE has decided not to work today.

Internet is working fine and he can use mail etc, but every time he tries to click on IE he gets a "Ie is pants and is crumbling in a heap. Do you want to tell Microsoft?" type message.

Can't use windows update to refresh it as that uses IE.

Any ideas how to fix it?

TIA.

Only idea I would suggest is not bother fixing it and install firefox.

In the words of the immortal "daft punk"

Really.

When I tried running Firefox on the Father in Laws machine, it wouldn't let me run Windows Update.

If this is no longer the case then this might work.

It's very likely that I installed SP2 before discovering Firefox, but I'd be very surprised if there are any issues. Have you tried searching the firefox forums?

That's a problem with the ActiveX settings, I too had problems as I had set security to high on both IE and Firefox, so neither would upadte Windows.
You can use Firefox just like IE, most people at work don't notice the difference when they use Firefox on my machine.

Ok, I see your point about firefox not working with Windows update.

However all the newer versions of windows have "windows update" in the control panel, which can do everything automatically without the need for IE to be used at all.

If you don't like Firefox then maybe try Opera

You can't use Firefox to do a Windows Update as it doesn't support active-x. So you do need IE to work (unfortunatly)

All I can suggest is that you re-install IE, download ie6setup.exe from microsoft.com. This might work if the problem is simply within IE, but I don't hold out much hope (sorry)

Oh dear!

Try these then - a couple of direct links to MS updates;

IE6 SP1

Cumulative update for IE6SP1

What might (and i'm totally guessing here) work is if you email the top of these two to your dad, he can run it and hopefully it will install SP1 for IE6. Either that or the second one might repair IE enough to get him back in business!

edit to add, someone beat me to it!

When I seay email him, I mean download the file and send that to him, rather than send him the link which of course will use IE and probably not work!

That goes through IE.

I figured since it does it without the IE gui actually running it might still work. Guess not!
