OK, tried a free CD burner on the folks PC. AVG picked up a trojan dialler. Didn't note what it was but deleted, virus, ad ware and spybotted the thing. All clear now. However, you can dial up the net, but not send or receive if that makes sense. Even program updates will not work. The internet connect thingy show a connection. Correct number appears to be in. Tied turning off the firewall but no joy. BT service page showing no problems in the area.

Any pointers

Cheers

No one? OK more info comes to light. BT software modem lock keeps popping up so suspect another naughty lurking. I have the updates for the anti nasty software and a few more gleamed from these hallowed halls.

Can someone explain the restore point and will re installing windows only affect that folder not the other program folders?

What OS are you on? Try creating a new dial-up connection and connecting using that.

Usually somewhere on the ISP's site there'l be a walk-through of how to recreate the connection - if that works just set the new connection as default in internet explorer/tools/internet options/connections.

Did that. No good. Help desk said that we must download IE and re install. We told help desk that we cannot connect etc, cue much gnashing of teeth and tearing of what little hair left.

Right o. Downloaded onto the mac IE 6 sp1 ????more updates and patches than an elastoplast convention in the same hall as accidents anonymous.

Me thinks best option is to back up pics and my docs and saved games files etc, reformat and re install.

All we wanted was a free burner that was better than the MS option

Winsoc fix worked. But if we try to connect a second time we get a 633 (?) error and a message saying something else is using the modem.

Re format and reinstall I think. Thanks again.
