Any body able to advise how to go about registering a URL that is currently un-owned?

Thanks, was going down that route but thought I would ask first.

Who would own the URL? Could the good fellows at Register1 bend you over in year 2 to maintain 'your' name or do you own the URL outright and they make their money on the hosting?

Podie is a close and trusted friend of mine and he also pointed me Jamies way as the man in the know.

From his profile it would appear he has a slight vested interest in directing me to the link at the top of the page. He probably is the best in the business if Pod has pointed me his way but just want to get my facts straight first.

Hypothetically if Ted had this site url registered with a firm and they turned round to him now and said to retain PH domain name is going to cost you £50k, that sound like some trousers being pulled down to me. If you look at it in terms of Brand Equity he could not afford to give that URL up, it is his brand and he has invested heavily to get it to where it is now.

Sorry, this is not in any way meant to cast any aspertions on anyones integrity but having spent all of my working life in Brand Management and Marketing I have come to question everything when it comes to something as integral as a brand.

Time to put some faith in a fellow PH'er by the looks of it.

You own the name. They can't take it off you unless you've nicked someone else's trademark.

I cant speak for other places which DO list themselves as the Admin / Owner contacts, but with Reg1, you own it, you're listed as the owner, its free to transfer it away should you wish, and you can even do so from within your control panel.

You're right to ask, not enough people do and get stung / stuck with charges to move domains away later (tho not £50k!)

Rest assured, non of that schnanigans happens here

According to Podie, Jamie is "a really good bloke, likes a beer and has just ordered some Italian autoporn"

Sounds like a pretty robust justification to use his services to me.

Cheers Jamie, just availed myself of your services and it certainly was easy as promised.

The main problem with marketing a service, espescially one like this with absolutely no tangible elements, is engendering trust in the customer. Website was v.good and exceptionally straight forward but there is nothing quite like a personal recommendation to finish the decision making process off.

Look forward to bumping into you at a forthcoming event for a beer.

Cheers

Ed
