Anyone an expert in the above field?

I've been asked to look at Automatic Vehicle Location solutions and I need an idiots guide.

I know how GPS works and I think I understand that most vehicle location systems use GPRS to transmit that data back. But I have a few more questions:

- If the GPRS is transmitted using the GSM network how much does it cost per vehicle? Some location solutions transmit updates every 30seconds - surely this is really expensive?

- If you assume that all vehicles are within a certain radius of base, can you erect your own GPRS mast and have a private GSM network?

- Some solutions allow you to transmit data back to the vehicle (to be displayed on a screen). I assume this is done with GPRS from the base station?

Any help appreciated, as the interweb is decidely lacking in basic info.

Asssuming the data is only the GPS co-ordinates, then this is a tiny bit of data - don't forget that GPRS is an always on connection and you only are charged for the data transferred - usually on a per Mb basis, and one Meg will allow alot of coordinate data...

If you have the infractructure kit availble, yes it would be cheaper...

however if you have to buy all the GSM standard kit, construct a mast, unlock the phones, purchase SIM card to work on your new network, obtain the necessary government licences for a new mobile phone network..... you get the idea!!

Probably cheaper even in the very long term to keep paying the few quid per month to the monitoring company!

Yes indeed, GPRS is two way, so data can be relayed beck to the vehicle.

Ta for the response, most helpful.

On further digging, with regard to setting up your own GPRS network it would appear remarkably straightforward.

Background
-----------
This is for a taxi company wanting to ditch their radios and go in-car GPS and SatNav.

This means they already have a telecom mast for their radio broadcast. It would appear that the GPRS mast piggybacks onto the original radio mast. Licensing costs are £80 a year to the appropriate authority.
These masts are good for about 25 miles from base station and therefore your average size town. About £2000 gets you the starter kit.

Have a look at RF Solutions, they do a text message module and a gps tracking module.

www.rfsolutions.co.uk iirc.
