Ok. Got back to work from holiday , and we have a "network problem ".

Apparently spreadsheets going flying off into hyperspace unless my networkcable is pulled out of the router.

Also , a mysterious icon , Intel Modem Event Monitor, has appeared on my taskbar , WTF is that , and is it as sinister as it sounds ?

BTW , PH has been described by my boss as "one of those chatroom things" again

I think I need a new job

Um, I think the modem thing sounds ok....although you might want to check you do have a modem attached
According to MalWhere, intelmem.exe is "Intel Modem Event Monitor provides certain features for your modem, such as detecting when the phone line is in use and you are trying to use the modem." so it sounds innocuous enough I had a quick search and didn't find anything nasty associated, although I could be wrong!

OK, where do the spreadsheets go? Is it from your PC? Is it from the network? Do you know where they end up? Or can't you find them? Is it just spreadsheets? Or other kinds of documents too? What OS are you running? And what service packs? It's kind of hard to diagnose without a little more detailed info

If it's C:Program FilesIntelModem Event MonitorIntelMEM.exe then that isn't immediately scary. The question is how did it come to be active on your system. One possible explanation is that somebody has been messing with your machine while you were away. Perhaps they installed a modem for some reason and messed up your network settings along the way.

Don't wish to alarm you, but files being randommly sent by your PC sounds like a symptom of one of the viruses, I just can't remember which one..

Time for a bit of Googling and then download a copy of the free version of AVG.

Zotob.

I've received about 20 of them a day just lately, from infected PCs. They pretend to be bounced mails from MAILER-DAEMON or from admin@{your machine} and so on. They all have a double-dotted virus payload which they invite you to open, attached.

Of course, virus writers are welcome to send as many Wintel viruses to me as they like, on account of a SPARC/Solaris machine has trouble running them...

Ah yes , it didn't occur to me that I don't actually use a modem .

What I was meaning was that the "network problem" was a ruse to get me to concentrate on my work.

I suppose he has a point
