Help with new laptop choice?
Discussion
Hi there,
I was just wondering if you guys could give me a little advice on purchasing a new laptop as I am fed up lugging my desktop back-and-forth to-and-from my term time address. I will be using it for uni so I am really needing XP Pro and will be wanting something that will last as well. Not only this but I am partial to a little movie and listening to a a bit of music as well so looking for something with a decent sized hard-drive although I know that an external hard drive maybe the way to go if I run out of space (again!).
I have been looking at Toshiba and Dell mainly, although I will admit to finding the Dell website very confusing to find what I actually want. This Toshiba has caught my eye though... thinking of spending up to £1000 and no more. What do you think?
Thanks,
Richard :)

I got a Dell 8600c last autumn - specced up to the top screen (excellent), 1Gb memory and 80Gb disk (probably more available for the price now) and WiFI card and it was a tad over the grand mark but there were some good offer deals on at the time. Also came with MS Works but no reduction in price if deleted iirc.
XP Pro is usually only a few pounds upgrade over Home. Presumabaly you can get student licence deals for MS software if you need it.
I didn't really need DVD high quality graphics so did not upgrade the graphics card. The results available are acceptable - but if I was buying with regularly playing DVD films in mind I would want a graphics card upgrade I think. For still digital images the screen is wonderful - but the graphics card has a problem trying to deliver complex motion to such a high resolution screen.
Hope you find this of some use.

I've just bought one of these www.toysrus.co.uk/Product.aspx/TruHome/TruComputers/TruComputersLaptop/784850
Now with a 1.73 processor, 1024GB RAM, 80GB HD, WiFi, TV tuner, integrated bluetooth etc etc for £799 and 6 months 0%. Free Lexmark X1190 as well. Seemed good value.

Check the service department before you buy. If an educated Indian voice says, "Welcome to Calcutta Computers," choose another make that has a representative in your local for advice a repairs. Afterwards, find a good Tandoori Indian restaurant and eat a fine meal in celebration of avoiding anger and frustration at faults unable to be fixed by someone on a limited time per person call who cannot see you or your computer.
Wise advise
