If a site is not hosted in the UK, on a UK IP, then it will not appear in the google.co.uk listings, correct? Ive been told this is so, understood it to be so, but have also been told its a load of claptrap. Does anyone know for sure?
Without being able to provide definative proof, it is widely held that non-UK IP's do not get UK listing.. why should they? how else is google supposed to know its a UK site? The Address?
Good UK hosting is 10-20x faster than US anyway, with a several hundred millisecond delay from the transatlantic link removed.

Your comments make sense, I agree, but no one seems to know for sure re: the IP address issue.

The answer is, as in so many other things, it depends. Yes, IP ranges are doled out to national registrars who subsequently dole them out to ISPs who dole them out to customers, so you can be reasonably sure that the endpoint of an IP connection to that address is in a given country. But in these days of NAT and corporate firewalls, you've no idea what happens after that. And DNS names have no geographical limitations whatsoever, so although your site might be called fred.co.uk, it can be more-or-less anywhere.
So, google.co.uk can have a stab at it, but it isn't going to be right all the time.
I am pretty much certain that UK listings are just for domains that have UK nameservers..
You can run a search on the IP address for the nameservers you are using on your domain name..

Mine is in the US
Fast enough though... in fact I've found it faster than most other websites online!
