So. As an aside to our usual Timesheets business we are thinking of getting into the provision of Geographic database applications.

We already know a good bit about geocoded image applications and are investigating a number of niche markets that could do with a web-based database driven application that incorporates location-based display and searches and so on.

Since we are a Microsoft shop through and through and they (currently) have the best offering in terms of a web service (based on how integratable it is - not the mapping - which is better on Google Earth) we are looking at Mappoint. The Web Service specifically.

So I'd appreciate any comments either marketeers or technical guys have to make about Mappoint. I'm particularly interested in how easy it was to use, customise, put clickable icons on the map etc from a technical standpoint.

I'm also very interested in what people have to say about applications using it. Do people want to buy them? If you use one does it meet your needs? Would you want to run your app on a server in your business or would you want it hosted?

Are Mappoint subscription costs (we're talking 1 cent per map average here!) a barrier?

Any comments at all about any aspect will be gratefully recieved.

Fiddled with the web service when I was learning about them. Its a good implementation.

As far as the service it provides I cant tell you but the SOAP implementation used is pretty good and you have the added bonus of not having the data type issues because MS and IBM cant decide on what a number actually is.

Folk love pretty pictures but I have always viewed it as a value add rather than a distinct offering...

I had a play around with the thirty day trial version. As a first experience with GIS software I found it easy to use but not as powerful as I had hoped. There didn't appear to be much data manipulation available within the package so everything had to be sorted out just right before importing.
Also aside from the obvious issues of uploading and matching postcode info (seemed almost hit and miss) the fact that Northen Ireland wasn't included as part of the UK postcodes was vaguely infuriating.
