Overclockers.co.uk
Discussion
Hi
I'm trying to speak to Overclockers about opening a trade account with them as I've heard good things about their product range, prices and service.
I emailed the PHer who owns Overclockers (Spie or something like that?) but didn't get a response. I've tried calling their 0870 number at least eight times today and it has been engaged. Unfortunately, their website doesn't provide the info I need or a method of contacting them about it (there are no email addresses just forms relating to orders and technical issues IIRC).
Has anyone got any ideas? Is this unusual and I've just been unlucky?
Cheers.
roadie.

I live very close to Overclockers <10 miles and I have been many times for the company I work for.
They tend to be very good but can get a little too busy to answer the phone sometimes, probably because they price products well. From my experience its not uncommon for them not to answer the phone.
I can only suggest you keep trying dude!, if you patience can extend that far.
They are also possibly based in the hardest location to find!.

OK, I'll keep trying and thanks for the reply. I must say though, from a business perspective, the last number I'd ever want to be regularly engaged would be my sales line. Given that it's an 0870 number (which I hate) they could even put people on hold and still earn their few pence a minute. Still, they're obviously successful so who am I to give advice?!

They dont offer trade accounts.
That's a shame. We expect to spend a high five figure sum on hardware this year and quite fancied Overclockers. Still, maybe we'll still get some stuff there if it's cheaper than trade accounts elsewhere.
Thanks for the help all.

God knows where from - they have a very poor repuation and one of the lowest scores on romulus2. Good place to start if you're looking for an alternative too - www.romulus2.com/feedback/chart.php?1 (bear in mind their ranking places ones with 15+ reviews in the last year over those with less!).
Back in the early days I used them quite a bit, then they seemed to grow too quickly while the owner was busy spending the profits on fast cars instead of investing in systems and staff that could cope.
A work colleage still perseveres with them for some reason, despite "next day delivery" rarely being the case, and them being an absolute nightmare to deal with returns. I gave up a long time ago - there's plenty of better choices out there.
^^ What he said.
Never used them myself personally, but they have a bad reputation on uk.comp.vendors. Of course the ones that do get good service never say anything positive, so you only hear the moaners, but still they appear to have a relatively high miss ratio.
OTOH, overclock.co.uk have an absolutely stellar reputation, and I've used them quite a few times.

Try www.scan.co.uk they have competitive prices and do trade accounts that might suit your requirements.
I realise I am probably sailing quite close to the forum "name and shame" rule with this post, but that is not my intention, as hopefully is made clear in my last paragraph. If however, any of the mods take issue with this post, please feel free to delete it.
I have regularly been using both Scan and OC-UK for my purchases in building my Athlon FX57 rig. I live quite close to Scan, so I am able to use their retail counter. Generally, they have all the new stuff in pretty quicky and their prices are generally lower than elsewhere, even if it is only by a few pence. The shop itself does get busy at peak times, but service generally is good.
I've had mixed experiences with OC-UK. Initially they were very good, with orders being taken by phone easily & efficiently and processed quickly. Their range of stock is impressive, plus they carry overclocking goodies that places like Scan won't. However, towards the end of my recent buying spree, they have become absolutely terrible in terms of phone service. The lines are constantly engaged, whether it be sales or customer services. The store is great once you actually get through, but that seems to take hours. You can of course order on-line, which I guess is something they want to encourage to reduce costs, but is something I prefer to avoid wherever possible. I would imagine a lot of trade is lost to rival vendors through sheer phone rage
. I became so frustrated at one point that I loaded a faulty part they had sent out into my Elise and drove all the way to Stoke from Preston with it, rather than try to get through on the phones again, then wait for courier collection and return.
Whinge over, I can say that I would be happy to place further orders with either store, but in light of the disappointing problems one experiences actually getting hold of anyone at OC-UK, I will prefer to buy from Scan wherever possible.

I use to use them loads too (spent thousands there!), not anymore though,I now use Scan or even Ebuyer! I have had issues with the latter, but any problem was dealt with very quickly and effectively using their 'enote' system.
I also use to like their forums, until it turned into nothing more than a shop window, and anything bad (even slightly) said against any aspect of the 'service', it was deleted by the Stasi type mods

I've used OC many times in the past. I know that they do indeed have a poor record for righting problems. The likes of Scan and Aria score far higher.
I have found OC to have a good range of the latest, greatest hardware and have built several PCs from their components.
The only gripe I had with them was that they once sent me the wrong barebones PC. Fair enough. Everybody makes mistakes. Unfortunately, it took four weeks of jumping through hoops to get the correct one, what with RMA numbers and posting the wrong one back. Since I was building the PC for somebody's birthday, this was less than ideal.
Damn good PC when it was finished, though.

I don't know about you but I wouldn't pay money to host a forum and then allow people to bad mouth my company in it. Deleting bad comments seems like sound business sense to me!

Great link - thanks.
Thanks to everyone for their input. It sounds like I'm not the only one who can't get through on the phones.
I'm going to take a look at some of the other sites suggested (scan, overclock, etc.) and see who else does trade accounts. We applied for one with Micro Direct last week but it looks like there are others I should be looking at too.
Thank again.

Some shops allow bad comments as they're confident they'll sort the issue out.
Yep, thats what I thought, if you don't listen, and be just downright rude to customers, some of whom could potentially spend thousands in your 'shop', you lose customers, quite simple really, I know of at least three people that I know, 4 including myself, that will never use them again.
Yep, sound business sense indeed!

It doesn't have to be. I can think of some companies (Overclock, KustomPCs, QuietPC, SVP/121cdr off the top of my head) that are happy to recieve both good and bad feedback and even deal with customer service problems in their public forums. If you're confident about your staff getting orders out correctly and on time, and dealing efficiently with returns, why wouldn't you?
But even if you wanted to make that a policy, there's no need to go to their extremes - no even mentioning the name of any competitors (defined as anyone who sells anything vaguely similar to them), no links to auction sites, etc. Others are happy to rely on their reputation and happy customers for repeat business.
Just deleting any comments critising your service doesn't make the problem go away.
