I was thinking of building an incar PC and just wondered if there is anyone in the UK that does a 12volt in standard ATX pc connector out?
I know I could use an inverter but that seems such a waste of power 12v->240v->12v.

make sure you get something that is capable of providing enough watts to run a Pentium chip...200W minimum! Then you need to think about the other items that are being run.

All in all dont run it through your cigar lighter as you might find the electrics get a bit hot and start flaming!

What is the application?

I was looking at advanced GPS, location system. Plus using it as a vast MP3/video player (my CD player is dying) and any other things I could think of. I/O is no problem. I may start off having it controlled by mains until I can iron out all the problems.
On the CD side it looks like the data is in raw digital PCM format. So all I need (hahaha) is to understand the datalines sent to the CD player - time to dig the logic analyser out! and reconstruct the correct signals.

Also consider the fact that you get bumps in cars, these tend to wreck hard drives. Also you get condensation that will kill any circuit boards.

It isnt that easy to stick a good computer into a car, trust me Ive been spending the last year on it!

Ok I was thinking laptop drive small etc. I also looked at disk-on-chip but HELL them things are expensive. What OS are you running. I was looking at DOS would you belive. Small easy to program. Slow CPU could be used.
Please tell me more...

Im developing a small little camera system that records 4 video streams.

The product would be ideal, but I think you would be scared off by the investment!

We need processing power, and to be honest you dont.

So I guess you could go for something similar to what youve suggested.

Cant give too much away on operating systems..etc email me if you want and I can discuss with you something a little more indepth
