Any experts?

Got a week to get generally conversant with it. I understand the concept and what it does just need to learn the nomenclature.

Any tips, tutorial links etc?

Opensource UML modelling tools??

Make sure you understand OOP to start with as UML is pretty biased in that direction. We used the book "Using UML (Pooley/Stevens)" when I was at Uni. It's reasonably easy to pick up with that. As for open-source modeling tools there isArgo UML.

Agree with the above - a lot of people I know have decided to ditch Rational Rose for argouml.

Personally, I'm not a fan of UML....I much prefer words to pretty pictures

I have a load of tutorials and things on CD so if you need help/want a copy just drop me a line

Even OO developers who claim to know no UML probably sketch out class diagrams and entity relationship diagrams without realising it. After all, it's just a way of diagrammatically showing the relationships we craft in code after all.

I learned Coad-Yourdon and then Rumbaugh. Of course Rumbaugh begat UML (as did Booch) and Coad-Yourdon was conceptually similar.

These days I wouldn't claim to use UML on a day-to-day basis but I still jot down / whiteboard class diagrams when I want to show how classes relate to one another (inhertance, aggregation, dependencies, etc.)

There's quite a good summary of the UML nomenclature
here

Words? Waste of time. If you're not going to use diagrams then cut out the middleman and use source code, you pansy.
