Just popped over from the TVR forum, hoping for a bit of help.
I have a Dell computer and want to upgrade the processor.
1) How much faster is a 3.06 (hyperthreaded ???) processor over a 2.55? (please don't anyone say 0.51)
2) I have found a 3.06 processor which will fit the PC. Is fitting it easy or is it something definately left to the experts?

Does your chipset support HT?

If you've never fitted a Processor before I generally wouldn't recommend it..
Your motherboard does need to support Hyperthreading yes, but if it does and you feel OK about installing a new processor, you can always give it a go.. You shouldn't have any problems as you will probably have instructions to follow...

Depending on how you use the computer you may/may not see any real differences in performance, but the upgrade is a good 'un

I think the difference you notice might depend on what apps are slow - games, video encoding, hardcore scientific number crunching / big CAD stuff etc will benefit but general wordprocessing, web browsing etc. might not be much different.

The real life speed of pc is down to a combination of stuff... hard drive, memory, mobo etc as well as processor.

On its own the cpu upgrade will make the overall system approx 5% faster, although rendering and other cpu intensive tasks will be noticeably quicker...

How much memory does the system have?

Thanks everyone for all the information and here are a few replies.

1) I have 1024 MB of memory.
2) I don't do any big number crunching things like CAD on the PC.
3) To be honest I don't know if the chipset supports hyperthreading, but I accessed a website that used a download to "interogate" my PC and it said that a Intel P4 3.06 GHZ 533HZ 478 pin 512K CPU w/hyperthreading OEM 533 front side bus would work (whatever all that meant)

In conclusion it seems to be that upgrading would not improve the performance so perhaps I should save my money.

Someone said it would not speed things up but is a good upgrade? Can someone explain why it would be a good upgrade even if it doesn't speed things up?

Your best bet is to save your pennies and get a whole new system. 478pin intel processors are on their way out and the newer systems coming out now also feature SATA 2.0 technology, faster bus speeds and faster memory speeds, all of which can make a significant amount of difference.

Cheers

I think the critical thing is to work out why you need to upgrade. What is the problem that makes you think you need to upgrade. If you can answer that question, then you'll find the upgrade process considerably easier.

I still have a PII 500 with 0.5GB of SDRAM, the mainstay of my use is CAD, and software development. I run media player virtually continuously, and it's still not too heavy.

The biggest perfomance hit these days is gained from upgrading peripherals. If you're going to buy a new computer, get the best you can, but for most purposes the processor is not the weak link these days.

If you do lots of gaming, then you may see a performance improvement from a CPU upgrade. There are one or two CAD applications which are heavy, I'll not bore you with the details, but games with big visuals are where its at for most normal people.

If you already have the preocssor just stick it in and see what happens. The worst thing that'll happen is that it won't boot.

Putting in a new processor isn't rocket science, in fact you'd be hard pressed to get it wrong. There are plenty of 'How to' things on the net.

My apoloigies it's a PII 450. Not that it makes much difference. The point remains the same.
