Ok, I've purchased a NEC 3540 OEM (yes I know 1st problem). Installed it, CD R/W function works fine.
Placed Nemo in the drive and can't play it. (not a copy version)

Real Player v10 (reports unknow file format) and starts upon DVD being inserted. Media player v9 hangs.

Whats up?

PC is a 1.4Ghz, 512Mb. win2000.

You will need to play the DVD through a DVD decoder.

There is a whole assortment of free ones you can download.

You can either download a codec pack that allows media player to play DVD's or alternativley download a seperate player.

Afterdawn has everything you need to know about DVD/CD technologies, including copying and it has a large assortment of software.

I like Zoom player which you can download Here

I suspect this will be the problem anyway.

thanks,
Download Zoom and still not work.
reports that it is unable to play [video_ts.vob this maybe due to a corrupt dile, missing filter, filer conflicts or hw issues

Have you tried any other DVD's to rule out the DVD being at fault?.

If not then the maybe a hardware/driver issue.

Another option is to right click my computer, click on the hardware tab and then click device manager (sorry btw if you already know this).

Then take a look under DVD/CD drives and then double click on your DVD drive and it will tell you if it thinks there are any issues.

Another thing you can try is to go into MyComputer and right click on the DVD drive and click open to see if you can view the files.

Let us know how you get on.

Try downloading the free trial of this product:

www.intervideo.com/jsp/WinDVD_Download.jsp

If it works (times out after about a minute or so), you can buy the full version.

Another DVD does not work. both of these work in a regular DVD player. (they both shop brought).

Win2000 device manager shows no conflicts/etc.

Let me explain what I've do/doing.

PC had CR-ROM only. I replaced this with a NEC 3540 CD/DVD +-R/RW. I have done nothing to any SW.
Would not the Win driver need updating? Currently it listed as a (Standard CD-ROM drives) The CD does burn files/music.

I have now also install an adapter PCI video capture card. That I want to convert camcorder taped to DVD. The requirements here are 600Mhz processor, win 98/2000 or xp, 128RAM, video card that support 16bit colour, sound card, cd-rom r/rw and/or dvd recorder. PCI slot. I meet all of these. And the s/w crashes. This I think maybe cos the previous problem.

Trying to get the DVD player to work I'm hoping will solve the other problem.
Any clues?

Pinnacle Studio is a good (inexpensive) all in one package for what you are planning. It has basic movie editing software and a good DVD creation piece as well. In fact, it is really good application for "learning" the vaguaries (or vulgarities, depending upon how you see it) of movie editing.

If you enjoy doing the editing, you may opt up to Adobe Premier Pro and Adobe Encore which, IMO, are about the best prosumer pieces of movie software.

IMHO

Get XP, it has most of the drivers included in it so you don't get half these problems

I agree about XP.

Also Studio 9 will run on 2000, just will not run as well.

From the Pinnacle Studio 9 requirements:

Microsoft Windows 98 SE, Windows "Millennium",
Windows 2000 or Windows XP (recommended).
The MicroMV digital video format is supported only
under Windows XP.
