Can a Whatsapps photo be traced

Received a Whatsapp 'Hello i am on Whats app' pic today from William.. looks familiar but cannot place him. is reverse tracing photos possible on Whatsapp and Facebook to jog my memory?

Put the mobile number into Facebook. If they have it linked to them it brings up their details I think.

Probably not the case but there have been various scams on whats app using similar approaches ?
