For the last couple of years I've been working in a second / third level technical role... completed token ring to ethernet migrations, built and spec'd servers, completed NT to XP migrations, provided support, AD and GPO infrastructure etc etc... but feel I should move on to pastures new. The question is... to what..?

There's an apportunity come up to learn Genesys, SQL, GPLUS, and J2EE... is this a good move and where should I expect to move after that...? - or am I best doing a project management type / BS role...

Thoughts...?

Change is good. Keeps you on your toes, challenged and interested in what you're doing.

J2EE can earn you good money and be interesting but you need to get experience.

PM can be lucrative but stressful and a right pain.

Time to think of long term goals? Take the money or enjoy getting up in the morning.

Tricky.

What about contract 2nd/3rd level helpdesk consultancy something like that?

If you are going to stick and 'evolve' where you are I think I'd look at the PM/BA side more than the techie side. SQL you can learn in an afternoon if you understand relational databases, J2EE is MASSIVE and fiddly.

Dunno, are you a mushroom or a people person, as thats the differential in the options.

hmm... tempted to try the contracting game, but do have some concerns.

Another option is the Siebel route...

As for the mushroom / people person - you've met me, you should be able to answer that...

Now Siebel, cant see that Oracle aquired that operation to sunset it...

Your background and general persona I think would be well suited more to the BA/PM stuff.

Ergonomics must be requirements extraction on an entirely different level so thats transferable for a start.

Hmm.. interesting points. I keep my hand in with the Ergonomics stuff, but I kinda got shoved in IT following one of those company initiatives.. The HMI stuff is, of course, transfereable.

Not so much the direct interface more the relative difference between, erm, prototypes I suppose.

The mindset of getting from the user what they want is the most important thing oh and ascertaining if what they want is what they really want.

I've got some thinking to do...

There was a suggestion that the ordering of a black Aston with a certain choice of interior, inferred that you were a pimp...

Although I do recall that "huggy" Hasler said you needed to go for red leather...
