Hi,

Hope someone might be able to help. I've got a server with 1&1 which I'm going to be ditching in favour of an upgraded one from 1&1 (I know I know booo, hissss) but it's all I can afford right now.

1&1 being the c@nts that they are won't simply transfer the domains from one server to the other, I've got to request a domain transfer for each one at £8.99 plus VAT a pop.

Is there another way this can be done without incurring this transfer cost? I can probably park 20 or so of the domains but will have to transfer the rest to the new server. I have access to the DNS record if it helps.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers, John

If you have DNS access you don't need their help - just change your A records.

If you are transferring to another hosting company, then you need to transfer the domains also. Personally I think charging for this isn't great but understandable from a business perspective.

As said above, you can simply repoint the DNS records to the IP of the new server you get, OR, request they give the new server the IP of the current server.

If they want money from you, tell them were to go.. you can BUY the domain new for £5.48, £8.99 is just robbery.

Fyi, Click the banner at the top of this forum, we're offering Xeon servers from £49pcm, £59 pcm for no min contract PAYG.

Let me know if you need any more info.

Cheers Peeps,

I have a feeling it's not going to be as simple as changing the DNS entry as the domain will still remain on the original server (you have to move 'packages' with 1&1) I will have a word with them and see if I can get any sense out of them other than stock answers.

Jamie, we were very very close to choosing one of your servers, it was the number 1 choice to be honest, made the enquiry etc but the only thing that took us back to one and one was that we weren't ready for a root server, a fully managed server is what is right for us at the moment. We weren't even going to go back to 1&1 as there packages weren't that good for bandwidth then in the last few days they changed their packages and made the bandwidth 'unlimited' at which point we couldn't say no.

Looks like we are probably going to pay for it now tho'

Cheers, John

No worries At the prices We're selling the Reg1 servers, it just wouldnt be commercialy viable to offer full management on top. 1&1 have had huge investment, and can afford to run many divisions at a loss in order to attract clients. They are offering .uk domains at £1.02 UNDER cost at present.. great for the client, not so great for the bottom line i'm afraid.

TBH, a Server with ensim on, and a firewall, is pretty much managed anyway. Ensim release security patches which are VERY simple to apply. The server is setup in such a way that you type in

yum update

and your applications are patched up-to-date.. hell, it could even be scripted to occur!

And we manage the firewall, so nothing to worry about there..

Either way, Good luck with the move.. I hope they dont recoup their Loss Leading prices too much on your migration.

Just to drag this one up again, Jamie when transferring domains would you expect the domain you are transferring to be 'renewed' for another 12 months from the date of transfer or are you just paying for the physical (if automated) transfer of the domain.

The reason I ask is that the 1st domain I've transferred between my 1&1 servers is still showing as expiring in 2005. The transfer happened 3 days ago.

Your answer will make me decide whether to take out the 7 day cancellation period or not with 1&1 if you get my drift

Cheers, John

PS, the 7 days finishes today

Yes,

All Transfers to us get a 1year (2 on .uk) renewal applied. Thats WHAT the transfer fee is about.

If they are chargeing you to transfer AND not renewing, I would be VERY unhappy, as its effectivly just a stealth tax.

Feel free to drop me a line.
