I've got a Sony Ericsson P800. It is connected to my computer via a sync station that allows me to swap information between the two. The sync station doubles up as a charger. For some reason the phone won't charge - it was fine yesterday, but won't play today. It isn't a connection issue because it still swaps info with the computer. It's about to run out of battery and I desperately need it for business tomorrow. I've tried the Sony Ericsson website, I've tried swapping connections around, restarting the phone and the computer. I'm now resorting to stomping around the room in a strop and writing plaintive messages on a motoring website. Anybody able to offer any guidance?

It's unlikely to be terminal. I've used SE phone for years now - they have inbuilt charge monitoring.

If the battery is very low, leave it on the charger for a while. The charge monitioring will then think about accepting the charge! This can take up to 20mins for charging to start. Then all will be as normal...

Hope that helps

Chris

Is it a separate connection to the sync station for power? Maybe that's fallen out, or the socket's switched off, or the bread knife has secretly unplugged it to hoover up or something?

No, it's a cable to a USB. All powered and apparently perfect. She did have a bit of a polish in the office yesterday, but doesn't seem to have wreaked any obvious carnage (although now you've got me wondering...).

I left the phone docked all night and it hasn't charged at all. Rapidly running out of power and patience (not sure which will exhaust first!).

MAM, are you sure about that?

I used to have a S-E P900, and whilst the base station plugged in via serial port (I believe you can get a USB converter but it still runs at RS232 speeds), the mains adapter was a separate thing that could plug into the phone directly or into the base station.

Are you getting confused with the SPV (that does charge via USB).

If you bought a separate USB converter for your P800 try digging out your original adapter. Failing that, check the underside of your docking station to see if the adapter has become unplugged.

Yeah, I am sure - bloody thing's been working fine for three years until this morning. It may be about to be mortally wounded...

I've just bought a SE-P910, which comes with the DSS-25 docking station.

The USB lead doesn't charge the phone. You need to plug the charger into the DSS-25 as well.

In your case, I would be inclined to remove the charger from the docking station and plug it into the phone directly.

Incidentally, any SE charger will fit your phone, so you should be able to pick one up from a phone shop, should yours prove faulty.

It's a combined charger/cradle. www.1a-handyshop.de/images/artikel/dat_p800_dss_25.jpg

Just spoke to Orange C.S. and their (predictable) response was that I should spend a couple of hundred quid and upgrade to a newer phone. So much for spending on business contracts to get first-class customer service. Why should I spend another couple of hundred quid on a phone that won't do any more than the one I have?

I've had the p800 and the p910 and on both phones the power for the docking cradle was a separate lead to the data link (i.e. one ran to the USB port, the other ran to the saocket on the wall). If you look underneath the cradle you should see that the USB lead is wired in directly, whereas the charger lead is detachable (and can therefore fall out)

Ah, I see what you mean. Sadly for me though that is also as it should be. Methinks I'm going to be buying a new phone later today...

Just checked my old one - I too have the DSS-25 USB cradle, definitely doesn't charge via USB, only via adaptor when either plugged into the phone directly or the cradle.

If I were you I'd pull the charger out of the cradle and plug into phone directly - could be the cradle has gone bad.

(Personally I'd upgrade to an SPV C550 (probably free or very cheap) - much better phone IMHO)
