My dad has just singed up for the virgin £15 per month service. Crappy usb modem arrives in the post, activation day comes along and so he sets it all up...

No connection..

He ran through all the tests, called their helpdesk, ran through their tests, stopping short of moving his pc so it could be next to the master socket (but he did run a cable from it to the pc s thats as good) still no joy.

I went over today with a proper adsl router, configured it with his settings, plugged it in an nowt, tryed it on the master socket, disconnected everything else in the house... nothing.

I then tried a normal phone in the socket with no micro filter, crystal clear, this makes me think there is a problem at the exchange, every other adsl installation I have done there has been a huge amount of interference on an unfiltered line.
I therefore have a feeling that bt have failed to enable the line properly.

Neeldess to say I called virgin who were about as much help as a lump of cheese in an ironworks. They claim to be on the case and will give me an update in the next few days..

My questions are..

Can anyone tell me a way to check and see if the line is enabled (I'm hoping there may be the odd isp on here who can check via their bt systems).

Any toerh bright ideas?

Cheers

Yes, if the USB modem says no and the router says no then it seems unlikley that the line has been enabled...

Has he put it on his other line or something?

What's that test account to check back to the exchange?

startup_user@startup_domain

I think. Rules out ISP problems and just tests the circuit.

I'm sure someone will confirm this soon

Good point, however as the usb modem thing is coming back with no dialtone then I don't think there is any point. I can also see on the router that it is not even trying to negotiate.
