Was hoping someone could help and tell me how do do something in Dreamweaver.

If you take a look here.
As you can see, I have a long list of links/pictures. The problem I have is that as I keep adding to this list, the background I have runs out and starts repeating, which I don't want. Want I want to do is keep the background as it is, but have my links in a window or frame that you can scroll through, keeping the banner, and 4 link buttons at the bottom in the same place within the browser window.

I also want it so that the links scroll over the background, I don't want the background to scroll with the links.
I hope you understand what I am getting at, I have tried to find some examples of what I want, but as is always the way, I can't!

Have a look here

www.dynamicdrive.com/

You might find something useful - certainly in the menus area.

Lots of good stuff on that site, but can't find exactly what I want. I have found an example of what I am looking for: see here
Is this done using frames? If you extend the frame with main body of info across the whole page, and then have the background behind the info as the background to the whole page, then that is what I am looking for. Here is a quick pic of how I want mine to look:

The scroll bar within the page will scroll through my links, with the main background not moving.

You can use an iframe (an inline frame) to have a scrollable area in the middle of a page. Do a google, there should be loads of info on using them. The page you linked to uses CSS to do a similar thing. You can use a style sheet to specify a non-repeating and static background image.

Edit. reading again you dont really want the frame business just the non scrolling background.

Paste this into your html, specifying the path to your image (delete the extra spaces in the style tags.)

< style > type="text/css" media="screen">< !--
body { background-image: url(pathtoimage.jpg); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-attachment: fixed; }
-->< /style >

All very long ways round something very simple!!!

Instead just replace your body tag in HTML as follows:
<body background="pic.jpg" bgproperties="fixed">

Where pic.jpg is the name of the file you wish to display.

I think I need some sort of frame or table, as I have about 12 different pictures/links to scroll through within the web page.

I think

I've edited my sample picture to make it clearer what I am after, hope it makes it clear.
Thanks for your help!!

Maybe, but the bgproperties attribute is not part of the HTML 4.01 standard and doesnt work in all browsers. Stylesheets are a much nice way of handling formatting in a HTML document.

Adam. Understand now. The simplest way to do what you want is to use 3 frames (even though frames are seen as a bit of a no-no now). One for the top logo, another for the scrolling centre content and the bottom frame for the nav at the bottom. You might need to make a different background image for the middle frame so it looks like they fade together.

Right, got most of the way there, I used iframes as you suggested, but still can't get the background in the frame to not scroll. The stuff in the frame is a seperate webpage. Thanks for your help so far guys.
Here is what it is looking like at the moment.

You could put the middle content in a table with a fixed height and overflow: auto to make it scroll.

e.g. use a style like:

<style type="text/css">
<!--
.scrolltable {
overflow: auto;
height: 400px;
}
-->
</style>

<div class="scrolltable">
<table width="100%">
...
</table>
</div>

Just realised it is not scrolling if viewed in IE, but scrolls if I view it using Firefox. Any ideas how to get it working as I want in both?

Found another way of getting what I want but this time it works in Firefox, but not in IE.
This time I have used the background-color: transparent tag to make the background of the page in the iFrame transparent, which works perfectly in Firefox, but in IE, I just get an off white background to the page in the iFrame.
Any ideas how I can get this to work in both browsers?
