in my house there are 3 computers all of which need to be able to connect to the internet. i have a 2meg connection with a voyager USB modem.
i have a few questions:

1) if all of the computers have network cards and we create a LAN via a small hub with 1 of the cpus connected to the modem will the others be able to use the internet?

2) is it possible to just get a different modem so that i dont have to get network cards for the cpus?

3) is there any easier way of doing this that i dont know about?

thank you in advance.

Easiest way.

Buy a Netgear DG834GT

Then you have to buy 3 network cards (which you are going to need whatever, unless the PC's have on board lan) but you have the choice of wireless or wired.

The DG834GT does everything you need, allocates IP addresses, connects to the internet, protects the network (firewall) and connects everything together.

You also dont need to have one machine on at all times for the other two to work.

You can do it the way you describe using one machine as a gateway using Internet Connection Sharing but this isnt the best way by any means, its hackable, has fairly high overheads traffic wise and is at times a bit flaky.

If you want a hand with this, gimme a shout - a DG634G really is the best option, and I can very quickly set it up foe you for the price of a pint of beer.

Let me know, email me if you like through my profile,

Neil

What I use, but beware I had to upgrade the router firmware before it would connect to the internet. (BT conenction).

I wish I was on commission for these. I've told pretty much everybody at work to buy these. Likewise, to use Nildram.

BTW I think the 634 mentioned by someone else is a router but not a router/modem. Fine if you're on cable but not if you are using ADSL.

There was an offer on these at amazon.co.uk recently - buy one and a usb wireless adaptor for about £60

Put the DG834GT and a WG111T in your basket and put the code NETGWRESADAP in at checkout.

Not sure if its still active but worth a try.

All sorted now, popped over and set it up for Chris (he'd ordered a GD834GT and USB wireless key) - gave him a little training and info, and now he's setting up the rest of the house

I like it when a plan comes together

How was 2ManyDJ's in the end Chris? - damn woman at home :grr:[/mad]
