You could try safe mode

Right-click the Start button
Click Run
Type powerpnt /safe
Click OK

Rereading- so the error is a windows update failure?

Have you done cmd > sfc /scannow and a disk error check ?

Thanks for all the above, ive tried all suggestions, still no go, yes its an update problem, i tried an update to see if it would help, if you try and open a powerpoint file it opens a blank powerpoint window, and just closes it.

Try loading it onto the online version. Then definitely make a backup.

works fine on the online version, and have multiple back ups.
online wont work as where she will be has no internet, so it has to be stand alone.
I just tried it on my computer, i dont have powerpoint, but i do have open office, and it loaded fine, so definatly a computer problem.

thanks for all the help, i ended up downloading a new version of office and re installed it, for £30 its worth it for a computer that just works for my 82 year old mum.

Sometimes it works out cheaper, i.e. time vs money
