Anyone used the Linksys wireless stuff, specifically the 802.11G ADSL router WRT54G-UK and the USB adapter WUSB54G-UK?

I can get one USB adapter and the ADSL router for £74 from Misco, including the VAT. Hardly seems worth drilling the walls round the GF's to wire the second PC upstairs at this price.

It's £14 cheaper than the Netgear solution and it's not my money, it's the GF's sons pocket money.

Can't check trade pricing at the mo, I've locked myself out of the system

Helped a mate with one of them the other day.

The web interface is a lot more clunky than the Netgear front end.

For £14 I'd be tempted to go with the solution that everyone recommends...

That you recommend you mean I did read your previous posts on the Netgear stuff first, but don't forget we are talking about pocket money here!

Don't particularly care about clunky interfaces, I deal with them all day long anyway. Did it actually work OK?

After setting the MTU size which was clipping certain URLs traffic.

Worked fine with everything but POP3 and Hotmail HTML access.

Changed the MTU and it worked fine, which was odd.

Its not just me though mate, the DG834G is universally well regarded from what I have read.

I know it's not just you, but you are a proponent of the stuff What did you have to drop the MTU down to on the Linksys BTW?

I'll pass on the info and let the boys decide. I don't particularly care if it takes a bit more setting up, that I can do. It's still going to be quicker than getting the drill out

Raised it from 1320 to 1500 and it worked.

Just to be different I'll give the linksys a plug. Seriously though I've used both and there's not much in it.

If you were talking about PCI cards the netgear gets it arse kicked by the linksys for range and software stability IMHO.

USB adapters seem easy and cheap enough. It's only got to get through the wooden ceiling. 2nd PC is directly above the ADSL line so range isn't too much of an issue and I don't do ladders if I can avoid it.

i had a linksys WAG54G and it was very good... for the most part. firmware seems to effect them greatly though.

it got blown up by a lightning storm and was replaced with a netgear DG834G which thus far has been superb. i'd go for that.

FYI broadband lines have an 8 byte overhead so as a general rule set your mtu to 1492. this worked great on my linksys. on my netgear the best mtu seems to be 1458 on my 2.3MB ADSL line.

Anyone care to tell a non-networking techie what an MTU is?
