Was fine yesterday, now clips are stop starting.

Things done since yesterday:

My son loaded a programme for his new phone
I downloaded an "AVI" video which I`ve never done before.

Could one of these have caused the computer to reset something or is ram memory being gobbled up in some way causing slower playback?

Have you updated your graphics card drivers?

I did for the latest Nvidia's and it stuffed up my DVD playback. Might be a similar cause.

No changes like that but also my son was organising downloading mpgs to his new phone.

It`s also playing dvds in similar fashion now and the computer seems slightly slower and jerky overall if you can understand that (not very technical I know!)

I`m wondering if he has a programme like WINMX chugging away in the background using up memory?!

Can I check this?

Sounds like the added program has overwritten a playback codec with an older (less compatible version).

What format is the AVI - DivX, XVid, is it 4GPP/MP4 mobile format?

Either way you probably need to remove the new program restore the codec type and check all's well.

Then if you are using XP and want to try again create a restore point and reinstall the program, test again, then without uninstalling it update your codec again and see if playback is working for all. If not use your restore point and bin the program.

PS for checking other programs using resources press CTRL ALT DEL and check programs running.

Your PS did the trick!

My son had left "Blubster" (whatever that is) running in the background and it was using 52% CPU capacity apparently - all fine again now, many thanks FWD
