The time has come to replace my aging Unifi USG & Linux-based controller. Openreach have finally brought FTTP to our village, and I want fast broadband!

My USG has a max throughput of 80Mbs, less with the security I’ve got configured. So, time for a UDM Pro, or even a Pro Max for the RAID 1 array. This means migrating off the Linux controller, and having the UDM Pro as the controller…

There’s a process described here that looks promising:

https://techbits.io/migrate-unifi-cloudkey-usg-udm...

Has anyone tried this, and if so, did it work??

I followed something like that and it worked fine.

Bear in mind you will need a fibre modem in bridge mode to connect to the WAN port on the UDM Pro.

Excellent, thanks smile

The bridge mode is what I plan to do. Current system uses a VDSL modem to the WAN port on the USG.

Why a UDM-Pro? Why not one of the newer devices like a Cloud Gateway Max? This is just for a home? Save yourself some money.

The UDM Pro also has RAID 1 Protect storage, and my cameras and Synology NAS are all well past their sell-by dates.

I also want to add the CyberSecure protection add-on, and that can really eat memory. So a device with plenty of RAM makes sense.

Why stay with Unifi? We switched to Cisco Meraki; better radios, better management. IMO, YMMV etc.

That would mean changing everything - switches, access points, the lot! I’ve got a good Ubiquity setup, just need to modernise the firewall….

Are you sure about the RAID1 for Protect? You'd need an NVR as well to achieve that.
Perhaps check your requirements if the UDM Pro is your decision. I say this with a UDM Pro in my rack with a single 3Tb drive in it.

I did a pretty straightforward backup/restore when I moved from a USG and Linux controller to a UCG Ultra. Worked fine. On FTTP you just run Ethernet from the ONT box to the WAN port and put in your pppoe credentials.

The UDM ProMax is a new-ish release with RAID 1. But sadly not with the PoE from the UDM Pro SE.

Not much RAID happening there!

Just checked my NVR Pro and that is configured RAID5, despite me not remembering doing it. laugh

For home use? Meraki required a paid subscription!

Yup - the Pro Max is the RAID 1 version. And is probably what I’ll be getting.

This. Did the same a few weeks ago when I finally tired of my USG glitching (I think PSU related, but the UCG wasn't expensive).

I wouldn't bother with Ubiquiti storage. Don't see the advantage. Unless you're going to invest in their cameras etc and use it for that.

Why not just swap out the USG for a Cloud Gateway Ultra? Perfectly good unless you go over gigabit speed. Bit of a bargain under £100.

Meraki Go is effectively a lite version with no subscription fees. Still costs double UniFi prices for the hardware however!

To update: the UDM Pro Max is now installed, with a pair of 8TB drives in RAID 1.

Migration went really easily; next job is to order up an FTTP line.

It’s receiving video using ONVIF from my cameras - some of which need upgrading to Unifi G6s. But that’s a job for another day.
