I used to be able to connect my Android phone via cable to the PC, used to get a message on the phoe asking whether i want to charge or transfer files, since the last update this does not happen and the phone won't connect. Downloaded Mircrosoft's Android link but that is not very good.

Could be many issues, cable faulty, USB c port faulty, the USB connection settings have been changed on the phone or the PC knows its plugged in, its just not telling you.
My guess would be cable or USB port, they both get worn out quickly.
Check your mtp protocol is turned on, on the phone too.
Finally, of that is all good, after the phone is plugged in, check in my pc that is doesn't actually show up, just without pining at you.

Sadly, that depends on the phone. Most, though, when you plug the cable into the phone, then the PC, if you drag the screen down from the top, you may see the message to enable it. It does work through Microsoft android link, which suggests there are no faults with the connections.
