I used to be able to connect my Android phone via cable to the PC, used to get a message on the phoe asking whether i want to charge or transfer files, since the last update this does not happen and the phone won't connect. Downloaded Mircrosoft's Android link but that is not very good.

Help please anyone, please?

Could be many issues, cable faulty, USB c port faulty, the USB connection settings have been changed on the phone or the PC knows its plugged in, its just not telling you.
My guess would be cable or USB port, they both get worn out quickly.
Check your mtp protocol is turned on, on the phone too.
Finally, of that is all good, after the phone is plugged in, check in my pc that is doesn't actually show up, just without pining at you.

Many thanks for your reply. The phone does not show on the PC as I presume I still need to link it via the phone, it used to ask me if I wanted to connect to transfer files or just to charge.

It does work through Microsoft android link, which suggests there are no faults with the connections.

How do I turn on mtp protocol?

Some cables are just charge cables and will not do data transfer, try a different cable.

Why not use Dropbox or Google drive or similar?

Given Android is Google, there's bound to be a seamless wireless method.

Try turning the cable round on the phone, mine only connects one way round despite being a USB-C.

Sadly, that depends on the phone. Most, though, when you plug the cable into the phone, then the PC, if you drag the screen down from the top, you may see the message to enable it.

Localsend app/program for wireless transfer works well.
