Anyone tried it? Recommend it or think its poo?

I'm just trying to decide wether to set up a mimo wireless network or get a couple of powerplug in network adapters. Trouble is, the router is at the furthest point possible from where the notebook is likely to be used, on a different floor and through 2 brickwalls and a chimney stack so I'm envisioning wireless problems.

Any recommendations appreciated.

Not tried it meself but Solwise do some of this kit ( www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline.htm ) and everything else I've had from them has been top notch.

Give them a ring, they are more than happy to chat about stuff on the phone to you.

its OK for general internet access...but can suffer from interference and bandwidth is lower than 11Mbps wifi - around 2-4mpbs

the next generation - 85Mbps stuff is due out in about 2 months which will be better.

saying that a Netgear RangeMax router WPN824 wouldnt have any probs with a couple of walls etc...I can nearly get a signal from my mates house, 300m through 2 walls and some trees

Cheers Ex.

Bogie, I've been looking at the 85mps stuff from Devolo particularly as they have a plug in music streamer as well. However I will check out the rangemaster. My concern is that whilst I may get a connection, the bandwidth may well drop off significantly and I'd like to use Skype over the network. Any data on that?

Skype is pretty light weight so should be ok there - there's plenty of people using it on dial-up and ISDN links.

the bandwidth will never drop below 1Mbps even at the furthest reaches of range - so wont be the bottle neck unless you have a fat pipe

Good point. I was speaking to the folks in SA at the weekend and they have the most appalling dial up service.

I got 2 85mb ones yesterday from those nice people at solwise.

One in the router, the other at the other end of the house. Plugged in the laptop and was online in seconds. I have done no speed testing yet but I can confirm it feels a lot faster than my 11g wireless lan.

I've got to try and get it working with mny crappy linksys media adapter tonight which I feel might be a chore.

I might also have a play with the security settings later if I can be bothered.

so my opinion? Great, go and get some.
