Possibly looking for replacement 'phones

Wife has an iPhone 7, son has an iPhone X. One has a battery that sometimes drops to 0 and only has about 67% at best, the other struggles to charge through the socket, he now uses one of those pads that the phone sits on to charge.
Considering updating the pair of them but not new, can't afford that. Especially for the use they get.
Where to look for a decent s/h phone? The iPhone X came from a fellow PHer at the end of his two year contract and has been great, the iPhone 7 was an ebay risk quite a few years ago and again been fine.

Contemplating updating my Samsung S9 as well but that's another story.

This, we have a pair of Motorola phones, I believe them to be as good, or better, than Samsung and iPhones and cost £250 each.

My current phone is a Moto G9 Plus, now several years old on Android 11. However, it does everything I require of it very well indeed and I echo that opinion; it's excellent VFM.

Samsung do produce some reasonably priced phones, if you look at their A series phones instead of the flagship S series they are much better value and will do everything most people will need and more

Going to guess your wife and son dont really use their phones much as personal devices if they are still using a 7 and X.


Probably just pick up refurb from Apple of a 12 or 13.

If the iPhoneX still works fine other than the battery, I’d consider taking it to Apple for a new battery.
I was using an ‘X up until last year when I upgraded to the iPhone 15pro because I wanted a better camera for my travels. Honestly, the X is still a great phone.

X isn't supported for OS updates anymore though, how long before apps stop working? Stopped support at iOS16 were approaching iOS 26 (19) now.

Thanks and yes, wife (7) uses it for a daily message or two from family, some google and photos, so uses him a bit more, again family texts and whatsapps etc. plus a little for college work etc
It's the 7 that has the battery trouble, the X is a charging socket problem.

Best place for an iPhone 12 or 13?
They won't go away from iPhone (I hate Apple stuff preferring logical Android/Windows operations) as my wife also has an I-Pad which links to the phone.

For me, I use my phone quite a lot, I'll have a look at Motorola as recommended above.

I'd look at Apple Refurb store and see what you can get there, I'm a Linux/Android user but I have a work supplied iPhone, I had a XR it was ok, now got a SE which is far too small.

I bought 2x iPhone 13’s for my parents this year from Reboxed. I bought their previous 11’s from there too with zero issues at all.

I got my first iphone, used, from giffgaff, no issues.
Don’t like big phones so upgraded from a 7 to iphone 13 mini last year.
It’s a big step up from the 7.
Wouldn’t recommend it if you live on the phone but I mainly use ipad or laptop for messages.
For a light user it is fine.
(as an aside, if your wife uses whatsapp , they now do an App for the ipad)

Motorola has their Edge 50 Neo for £199 at the moment. I bought one last week - gets good reviews

If battery life is important than I can highly recommend the Red Magic Pro 10.

Absolutely love mine. Not that expensive new compared to Samsung/Apple flagships.

Had a look at the Edge 50, seems there's 3 versions. Price is affordable, looked at the Red Magic and afraid that is beyond my budget but thanks for the suggestion ChocolateFrog.

The Edge 50 is last year's model. The Neo has 5 android updates, the others only 3. The Neo is also smaller than the others at 6.4" compared to 6.7" - the size was a main selling point for me coming from a 5.9" phone. That and the very low price.

My wife has an Edge 40 and does not like the curved edges to the screen. I think the Edge 50 is similar.
