My son tells me its nigh on impossible to install an ad blocker on a chrome book.Is this correct or not.

No - adding an ad blocker to Chrome is exactly the same process as it is on a Windows machine.(go to Extensions --> Visit Chrome Web Store and pick one).

You can block adds by changing the DNS settings to one such as dns.adguard.com
