Old win xp pc doesn't see e: cd writer drive

Had an old pc sitting with win xp on it i used for music recording about 15 years ago,i used to be ok building pc,s but whatever reason my brain has turned to mush lately.
Anyway i installed a new cd writer drive and it doesn't show in 'My computer' at all as the E: drive it should be,all there is,is the C:,D: drive and a virtual drive F: which i can't remember a thing about! :-)
So my new cd writer drive E: is 'not' in 'My computer',but it 'does' show up as present in the tabs that pop up when the PC finds new hardware and asks if you want to search for whatever driver is needed i want to search for?
How do i check in bios if cd drive E: is recognised?Thanks.

Does it show up in Disk Manager and have a drive letter?

Press whatever key the BIOS tells you to press to enter setup, (F1, Esc, Del....) go to the page with drives on (not the boot order), see what devices are displayed. You're likely looking for an 'ATAPI' entry.
Given the scenario/time, I suspect your BIOS battery is dead and the settings have defaulted, hence no drive until you run bios setup.

That being said, last time I went in and looked for a CD drive must have been at least 10 years ago, so I could be talking utter guff.

A huge stretch as I don’t know much, does the new drive have pins in the same place on the connector, so they (computer and drive)talk to each other?

Is it IDE or SATA?

If it's IDE, it'll probably need configuring as master or slave using the pins on the back of the drive for it to work properly.

Then you'll need to check in the BIOS to see the relevant IDE / SATA stuff is enabled and that it shows up.

Then go into Computer Management and assign it a drive letter if required.
