I'm quite hard on stuff and tend to knock it about in everyday use. Would this be a sensible option over new of a false economy?

Get a case and screen protector for it and it'll be finehttps://techmarket.co.uk/products/samsung-galaxy-w...

I used the Spigen screen protector on my Galaxy Watch Ultra (as I do on my Apple Watch Ultra) and generally it's in a Ringke or ESR case for every day use - watch is absolutely spotless
Same with any used tech, battery life is the problem. Other than that, they'll be just fine.
The watch 6 came out 2 years ago. Make your own mind up on how the battery has faired. The newer models don't offer much of an upgrade for a 'normal' user so if you're ok with charging it every other day it'll be good for a while.
