My 6 1/2 year old wants a Switch for Christmas.

Just wondering what the difference is between the V2 Oled version and the new Switch 2?

How easy are they both to connect to play through the TV etc?

My thinking is with the V2 version rather than the New out Switch 2 is that he can have quite a few games and accessories included if i buy second hand.

Had a similar situation for our 7 year old (well, maybe a bit for me too!).... We ended up buying a Switch 2 as there were offers on last week I took advantage off so I paid just under £380 for the Mario Kart bundle

I took the below points from https://uk.pcmag.com/gaming-systems/157417/nintend...

Swtich 2 can output at 4K to the TV, Switch 1 cannot
Swtich 2 has 256GB internal memory, Swtich 1 has 32GB (micro SD upgradeable)
Some Switch 2 games wont appear on the Swtich 1
If you subscribe to the Expansion Pass, you can access GameCube games on the Switch 2, like F-Zero GX, Soulcalibur II, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Those titles won't be on the Switch 1 at all

I was tempted to go for a 2nd hand OLED as you would get more for your money but I already have a GameCube and a Wii that were owned from new. As I was in the market for the Swtich now, I didnt want to have to buy again later.

We have a couple of Switch 1's in our household and I've bought both kids a Switch 2 for Christmas.

Both Switches work in the same way regards connecting to the TV, basically no difference, they both use a docking station which runs a HDMI lead to the TV.

The Switch 2 will run Switch 1 games but obviously the Switch 1 will not run Switch 2 games.

The Switch 1 has a substantial games library, the 2 currently doesn't but i'm sure that will change over the next 6 months.

You can buy Switch 1 games used and it's a good option but a lot of the AAA titles, Mario, Pokémon etc hold their values very well used so not always a significant price difference.

Even though I've invested in the Switch 2 I'm still not too convinced it's going to be as big as the first Switch was and is but time will tell.

It comes down to how much you want to pay and how much use the child will give it before they realise all their friends are playing on PlayStation or Xbox and want to move to that instead, my two daughters love the Switch but my Nephew has a Switch but barely touches it after less than 12 months and got an Xbox which he uses instead.

Thanks for the replies. I’m leaning towards the switch 2. Just have to convince the missus. She wanted to get him a quad though but I’ve quelled that a bit when explaining I broke my leg on one when I was 10

And can top him up on games here and then as he plays on it.

He does enjoy his games in the iPad and he’s few years off wanting a PlayStation I think. And on that point a Ps5 will be at the house as soon as GTA6 comes out anyway

Probably the only benefit at the minute for the Switch 2 is Mariokart world.
Especially if you look at used prices of the Switch compared to new prices of the Switch 2.

A good used Switch complete in box will be about £120, (V1 or v2). OLED about £160 although I did pick up a good OLED for £70.
Thats alot of gaming for not much money. The games all hold their value so buy them second hand and sell them on after and you'll be at about cost zero.

They are pretty bullet proof aslong as you dont bend them, break the charging port or put them in water.

The joycons will get drift, but unlike PS and Xbox its mostly dirt and contamination rather than the traces wearing out. Some IPA under the dust cover for the thumbsticks cures it 80% of the time (another 10% you can open the thumbstick and clean the traces, the final 10% you need to replace the thumbsticks (about £1 each)).
