Would a s/h sky Q box still pick up the normal 'Freesat' channels if i connected it to the dish?
And record the progs for later viewing?

Can't say for definite about the Q box but certainly, the earlier units of which I still have a few in the loft would work, just the "paid for" channels were "greyed out"

Does the sat dish have a wideband Sky Q LNB on the end? Or older Sky HD LNB?

Sky boxes show the free-to-air channels, but you cannot record or use other functions without a Sky subscription.

Yes it does, just doesn't let you record and the mini boxes stop connecting to it if you no longer have the paid TV service.
